Week 24 - WTA500 HSBC Championships Queens Club, London - Grass

Had to laugh at Annabel saying Zheng coping with the cauldron of an atmosphere! Pretty certain she has played in a lot worse!

Yeah the atmosphere at Queen's is hardly a cauldron biggrin

Break seems to have shaken her service rhythm though. First break to Emma in the second!

Zheng levels have dropped a little, her first serve is not working.
Emma back on top.

Double fault and it's back to 4-4

Qinwen really stepped up her level from 0-3 and a double break down in this set

Commentators seem incredulous that a top 5 player is playing well?

She is not a big name, for those who don't follow tennis regularly

But surely the commentators know about her!

Some excellent tennis from Zheng after that terrible start to the second. Quite a clear gulf between them but plenty of reasons to be cheerful about the next month of grass tennis for Emma.

Onwards.

Not very impressed with the standard of commentating at this event, apart from Anne. I think if Laura et al were a little more realistic about Emmas chances it would help. We are at the stage now if Annabel or Laura say someone is going to win then they will lose!

Have to say match next up should be a cracker between Navarro and Anismova.

A very entertaining match with both players going for broke at times. The level particularly early on in the first set was sky high, very little between them with Zheng relying on huge serves to get out of trouble. Emma came out swinging and blasting forehand winners.

Credit to Zheng, she is the Olympic champion and came up with some clutch tennis when she needed it.

Even though the second set score was closer, I actually felt Emma's level dropped off after the first set. She wasn't serving as well - missing more first serves and going more for spin than power, which made it easier for Zheng to retrieve the two breaks after her mini lapse.

Suspect that was related to the back problems which seem to be holding Emma back at the moment. When fully fit and striking the ball as she was in the first set, she's certainly capable of winning some titles on grass
