Week 24 - WTA500 HSBC Championships Queens Club, London - Grass

It was a massive improvement from last week. Thought she served well throughout. Hopefully will get a bit more luck with the draw next time

 She's just beaten the #16

Why should the #15 be a problem? biggrin

I thought Anismova looked a bit fragile today

Both Kasatkina and Anisimova went deep in the FO, so haven't had much time to adjust to grass. Well done Sonay and Jodie for winning/coming close but expect Anisimova to be much better in the next round.

Oh yes, Anismova is the favourite, that's for sure

But we'll see if she's really got it sorted ....

She had a pretty dreadful grasscourt season last year - lost in R1 in Hertogenbosch (to Mandlik, which is no one to be scared of) and then lost to Lys in qualis at Wimbledon - I don't think her ranking is a grasscourt ranking

If Eastbourne is loss making (which whenever I go is packed to the rafters), how on earth to the other 250's make a profit (the ones where there is about 3 people there during the week).
Tickets are not cheap either..

Prize money for Eastbourne is well over 1 million, being a joint tournament.

Ticket sales will probably cover most of that, but then you have all the costs of putting up stands, hotel and expenses for players and officials etc. This is where you need a good sponsor.

The LTA had to cough up the loss - the LTA lost £4million on their grass courts tournaments last year

Queens (mens) was the only one to make a profit

I went to Queen's today with a £20 ground pass. This gave me access to lots of seats on Court 1 plus a small stand on Court 5. Centre looked nearly full on the screens and Courts 1 and 5 were packed all day. I have attended Birmingham, Nottingham and Eastbourne regularly. None have ever been anywhere near as full on the opening day. It does seem very corporate but definitely popular. My only disappointment was that only nine matches were played across the three courts. Tomorrow seems to be a mere eight. Very few for the first round of an event!

There were over 500 free seats on Centre Court, from the seating plan and ticket availability - the screens are misleading

I thought the centre court tickets were good value today, given you can also use them as a groundspass

And tomorrow too

But they're having real difficulty shifting them, despite the good weather

It's better at the end of the week, as you'd expect

£20 seems cheap- compared to Ilkley. They are £17 each via the LTA and £3 per person booking charge - so £20. Same level of access as well, ie not centre court.

Ive decided to go to the ground and get them on entry (want to be sure of the weather) and avoid the silly booking fee (nearly 20 percent?! Why?!) in doing so.

Pity there are so few matches scheduled tomorrow - maybe they think they'll all be three sets. I'm looking forward to finally seeing Emma play live anyway.

There are very few matches every day! Could easily either take a bigger entry (why 4 byes in singles?) or condense the number of days.

And hope you have a great time smile

Yes, I'm there today and hoping to catch some of Heather's match before play starts on the main court.
Three matches does feel a bit sparse but hopefully good ones!

It woild be nice to get there early, but it's a 2 hour journey and we are aiming for the 9:50 train. I reckon that we won't be able to get near the court by the time we actually get  in. I'll report when I get home late evening.
