Week 23 - ATP Challenger 125 - Lexus Open - Birmingham, Great Britain (grass)

Ps George is 225 in race with his 118 points. 120 points is a decent shout as a line.

I think Jay, Oli and Ryan would be sound to me. George needs to show some more. Others need to push on hard. All makes sense, Brittak.

Dont forget Jay is in qualifying as of right on his ranking

Do you think the French go through all this when they hand out wildcards? I am going to Wimbledon on first Tuesday and want to see as many Brits as possible.

Me too, I went on the 1st Tuesday in 2019 and had a fantastic day watching Harriet, Paul Jubb, Jay Clarke and others with the added bonus of a Centre Court ticket for Roger.

Actually I misread what you said and thought you suggested these three for main draw wild cards. Which id largely support.

Dont get me wrong - I do too! I will be there that day as well but at some point there has to be an element of earning a place rather than just being given one

Don't think you can compare Roland Garros wild card discussions with Wimbledon. For a start you only have 6 wild cards after the two reciprocal places for the US/Australia (which are quite ridiculous).

For men, Wawrinka got one, as did five French men all ranked in the top 160. For women, four players were in the Top 200, one was a 19 year old at a career-high ranking, and one was Lois Boisson.

Not sure much deliberation needed.

Back to Birmingham:  I make the observation that seven seeded players were on court yesterday. They all lost.

Yes

The qualis wildcards were far more 'out there', more radical, more controversial - ones given to completely unranked juniors, for instance

The main draw ones, as you say, were pretty safe

But the point that the French would never, ever worry about justifying favouring the French, using all their wildcards to that end, no matter what, is certainly true

And we gave all 8 main draw ones to British men last year, so clearly we werent afraid!
