RE: Wimbledon wildcards (women)

The main draw WCs will be straight forward as Fran, Harriet, Heather and Jodie. Lily and Marni are too far out and not currently showing any likelihood of being a potential top 100 player anytime soon that they should have the experience. The only question over main draw WCs is, will Mika be upgraded to the main draw for being a British junior Grand Slam champion?. Personally I would not, but I suspect the LTA will make a strong case for it. And we could do with freeing up a qualifying WC but that isn't a reason to upgrade her. I still have the question as to is she going to skip some of the early grass season to concentrate on exams. With Ilkley a week earlier this year, that could leave her with few options for preparation after 6 or so weeks out of competitive action which would leave a stronger case to leave her in qualifying.

In qualifying we already have Mika if not moved up. They'll be 2 for the play off winners and most likely Jamrichova, leaving 5 for the rest. Mimi and Hannah I would expect to get the nod. I think there is a case for not giving Hannah one this year, but the LTA are not going to leave her off the nomination and her run to the FQR last year and the interest it generated is probably justification enough to the committee for her to receive one this year, regardless of other performances. That would leave 3 for Lily, Marni, Emily A, Ella, Millie, Naiktha, Alice and Ranah. Lily and Marni, if needed, will get undoubtedly get one being just outside the cut so who do you choose between Ella, Millie and Ranah? I don't think Naiktha or Alice will be in the mix at this stage.

Old Dominion University said over a month ago that Sofia Johnson had received a Wimbledon WC. I've sat on that as I interpreted it as an embellishment that she will have the NCAA WC to the play-offs, although at that stage she wasn't guaranteed that. It could be she has a doubles WC but if I was giving a graduating college player going pro a doubles WC it would be Alicia.

I wouldn't put Marni and Lily together, even though they are similar in ranking

Marni has far more support (as the addict implies too), is a lot younger, and has far more potential upside

Also, Hannah's performances this year, over the last 6 months, have been better than Mika's

Any one of those four (including Mimi) could easily make a case for a MD WC on the back of a couple of good results in the run-up tournaments

BUT they do need those couple of good results - none of them is quite there at the moment - not far off, though, it wouldn't take all that much to push them up

And that's fair enough, IMO

Other countries quite often do; I know there are arguments against but there's a good argument for it too

I'd be pretty disappointed if Lily got a main draw wildcard. She's done very little of note in the last 12 months. Indeed last year she was in qualifying for the French Open but has now dropped to 249 in the world. Would seem like a reward for failure in a way to me. I know that may sound harsh but I'd far rather see her potential spot given to a younger player, more the future of GB tennis. For eg I'd rather see Marni get one.

Trouble is that none of the younger set have really done much this year to deserve a wild card.

I suspect Heather will get one though again I don't think it would be deserved on current form. I know there is this argument that the crowd want to see her but personally I'd rather we gave it to someone else.

I used to go to Roehampton Uni, you could turn up for free and watch all of the qualifying take place. It was such a nice day after lectures. I can't believe it now have to pay (even if it is only £15).

Yeah when I first started going it was free. Almost wasnt sure if you were in the right place as you just wondered in. Think it was £5 the first year they charge. but they have made it all a bit more professional and the AELTC now run the site on a lease, so have built some courts that temporary stands can be put around. Still think at £15 its an absolute bargain.

French wildcard WR350+ Lois Boisson has just beaten WR3 Pegula to make the QFs at RG.

She needs to string a few wins on grass to get a MDWC ahead of some of the other GB girls.

She is almost certainly guaranteed a QWC

99.9% guaranteed a QWC before this win too

But it will be interesting if she can stake a claim to a MD one

I sort of feel that the AELTC/LTA wouldn't want to split Mika and Hannah i.e. one of them would have to seriously outperform the other and do very well to get a MD one (by herself)

But Mimi is far better ranked than either, she's only 17, she'd likely be 18U champion if she'd played

It would be quite easy for the authorities to take a punt on Mimi, ahead of the others ahead of her, given her age and profile

Dart and McDonald have a fair few points dropping over the next few weeks. Fran seems to be focussing on the clay.Marni  and Lily havent wowed although Hev seems a bit more focussed. I would give one to Jodie and Mimi. Current live rankings subject to change! Notwithstanding our three automatic entries.

Not sure why you say Fran is focussing on the clay. She is playing Queens next week same as Emma and Sonay

Is there a qualifying list anywhere ? Haven't been able to find one so far.

Edit - there's an early list on tennisforum - shows Sonay and Fran (Emma with MDWC). Last qualifying entry shown is Linda Fruhvirtova WR152
