Wimbledon wildcards (women)

Hannah got a QWC last year but there is a balance to be had and there has to be an assumption that a Junior will atleast be a little competitive. It's to nobodies benefit to see a young player completely out of their depth.

ETA Mimi and Mika both got one too.

I'm optimistic but I'm still hoping that Mika gets WC into some earlier grass events then shows enough of the play I think she's capable of to then get her a MDWC given she's US Open junior champ. Has she shown much form on grass in juniors at all? Which events is she likely to get into before wild cards are announced

She played really pretty poorly on the grass in Wimbledon adults qualis last year

BUT she actually was very good in junior WImbly in that she was VERY unlucky to lose to Kostovic 10-8 in the tie-break in R2

That said, she lost in R1 at Roehamption in a not great match

TBH, her grass performance was pretty middling last year. But a lot of her form was pretty middling AND SOME was amazingly good - so that's the point, you have to roll the dice, have faith and see it as part of the longer journey.

I think for both her and Hannah, and Mimi if not injured, it will depend very much on the events pre-Wimbly - and, yes, I think both will get wildcards into a couple of the big run-up events

 Cheers CD that's super helpful.

I get what you're saying Emmsie. And if it was me actually making he decisions I would probably just give a qwc but I just like to dream....and I think the highs that Mika has showed allow this more than most. She's inconsistent enough that if she did somehow get a main draw wildcard even due to actually showing loads of form or qualifying she could then get absolutely hammered in the main draw but I also feel like she could really rise to the occasion and do something spectacular (by which I mean beat a lower ranked player - which but given her age would be huge). I think like you say it's way too much to give a mdwc as it could end up being quite a negative experience.

I see Hep hasn't been mentioned in this discussion - or is it a year to early for her?
My shoe-in picks are Emily A, Ella, Millie R with Naiktha and Alice showing good form (if a little way down the rankings). And Ranah as well.

Worthy of noting that with Birmingham, Ilkley, Queens, Nottingham, Eastbourne there are lots of big events worth doing well in for all our girls that get the chance, not just Wimbledon. And all give more points and money than many of them are used to. Its a big 6 weeks or so of tennis for Brits

Yes. I don't think Alice has friends in high places and think it's unlikely she gets a QWC unless she really makes a big surge upwards and absolutely can't be ignored

As you say, Emily App, Ella and Millie are good picks. Ranah maybe....

Obviously Marni too, is a slamdunk, if she's not in as of right, and if she's not got a MD WC

And Hannah, Mika and Mimi will all get them, unless injured or unless promoted to the MD

Which doesn't leave much wriggle room biggrin

The wildcard playoffs looks like being wild :)

Do we need a wildcard for the wildcard playoffs thread as well -

Some qualify as of right, some wildcards

Don't think it needs a separate thread - but up to you

The main draw WCs will be straight forward as Fran, Harriet, Heather and Jodie. Lily and Marni are too far out and not currently showing any likelihood of being a potential top 100 player anytime soon that they should have the experience. The only question over main draw WCs is, will Mika be upgraded to the main draw for being a British junior Grand Slam champion?. Personally I would not, but I suspect the LTA will make a strong case for it. And we could do with freeing up a qualifying WC but that isn't a reason to upgrade her. I still have the question as to is she going to skip some of the early grass season to concentrate on exams. With Ilkley a week earlier this year, that could leave her with few options for preparation after 6 or so weeks out of competitive action which would leave a stronger case to leave her in qualifying.

In qualifying we already have Mika if not moved up. They'll be 2 for the play off winners and most likely Jamrichova, leaving 5 for the rest. Mimi and Hannah I would expect to get the nod. I think there is a case for not giving Hannah one this year, but the LTA are not going to leave her off the nomination and her run to the FQR last year and the interest it generated is probably justification enough to the committee for her to receive one this year, regardless of other performances. That would leave 3 for Lily, Marni, Emily A, Ella, Millie, Naiktha, Alice and Ranah. Lily and Marni, if needed, will get undoubtedly get one being just outside the cut so who do you choose between Ella, Millie and Ranah? I don't think Naiktha or Alice will be in the mix at this stage.

Old Dominion University said over a month ago that Sofia Johnson had received a Wimbledon WC. I've sat on that as I interpreted it as an embellishment that she will have the NCAA WC to the play-offs, although at that stage she wasn't guaranteed that. It could be she has a doubles WC but if I was giving a graduating college player going pro a doubles WC it would be Alicia.

Caroline Wozniaki is pregnant again so wont be asking for one but I could definitely see Kvitova be given one as shes a a wimbledon legend.

She's not on the entry list, nor is Sloane, so I agree, they are both strong candidates if they want to play.

The entry list only shows the first 100 alternates, cutting off at WR195. Sloane is WR392. I don't see why the AELTC would give her a WC. She hasn't got a particularly strong record at Wimbledon.

Except Sloane is a former grand slam champion

The play offs are 10 direct acceptances, the winner of West Worthing, the highest NCAA ranking (Sofia Johnson), 2 of the top 3 in girls rankings (not used, Mika, Hannah and Mimi will either have QWC or be directly in the play-offs - reverts to next in), 2 discretionary WCs.

Thanks for all the above Lambda. You have set out much of what was passing through my mind but hadn't crystallized and posted.

As Marni is on the LTA PSP that might just influence the committee to give her a MDWC even though she is WR278 (up 44 this week)

Do you not think emily A? She had a great grass season last year, for her level, and could well be the most effective this year in terms of chances of getting somewhere in the draw.
