Wimbledon wildcards (women)

Holly is 27 and ranked 281 which makes her British doubles number 17....

I don't really see a credible argument for her to be honest, especially when you have players like Maddie (ranked 120) not featuring. There's not a single one of the criteria under which Holly could even be argued to fall into for consideration. Even Tara and Naiktha would be well before her in the 'have a moan about it' stakes. Ella is a surprise but they obviously wanted to give Xu a doubles slot too and she's been the lucky one chosen to pair her (and it helps she's only 19).

Let's just be happy they are actually using the doubles wildcards. Usually they leave 3/4 spare.

I agree - I was refering to a partner for Ella though. Ella is ranked 247 - not much above Holly. No idea why Tara 187 and Maddie 122 miss out - favouring the younger players I presume.

 Yes, I agree

I don't see that Holly is hard done by at all

And as to the others, well, Naiktha and Tara both got doubles wildcards last year (and Ella didn't)

So there seems some justification for moving things around

And Ella is only 19 (as you say) and has been moving up the singles quite nicely - which is a factor for the doubles too - it's a way for the LTA to fund young singles players and give them exposure at the top level, even if they're not the absolute best doubles players - and I don't have a problem with that

Maddie seems to me the only one with a justifiable expectation who's going to be a bit disappointed

Agree CD. Maddie is the only player I think feels 'missing' in the round, but then I'm used to years of players ranked 150ish not getting doubles wildcards lol.

So, I think I am looking for Alice G and Naiktha to get through the play offs?! Are we all basically looking at the same players to bolster our number or is there enough variation in prediction options to give Indy a fright?!

As much as I would be thrilled for Alice to have her moment, I would be hoping as an old timer nostalgia man for Katy and Katie S I think - potentially pushed hard by some of our 'second tier' juniors - Dani, Brooke etc...

It's quite open this time around, so will depend on the draw.

I'm hoping to see Hollie Smart in the draw

(and maybe Megan? although she obviously is playing the Giorgio Armani Classic at the Hurlingham so she couldn't play qualis even if she qualified so it wouldn't really make sense to do the wildcard playoffs)

Dani Piani definitely, and Brooke

And Alicia and Kat Barnes

Presumably, though, Megan isnt committed to Hurlingham in terms of not being able to pull out - it isnt an official event? - unless her contract stops her pulling out. So she could pull out if she played and got the the wildcard playoffs?

10 in total already is great to see. Certainly helps having three women in the worlds top 50. It doesn't seem that long a go we barely had one.

I think there are at least 18 players with a world ranking in addition to the juniors and others mentioned above who might enter. So don't rule out the likes of Naiktha, Freya, Kat, Tara, Vic Allen, Emma Wilson, Dani, Brooke - I could go on.... These women aren't playing anywhere else this week so it is going to be competitive. Sign-in closes in a couple of hours, but who knows when the LTA will publish the draw !

If it is ok I will pop up a separate thread for the playoffs themselves

I think she's signed with IMG now

It may be understood that she's doing Hurlingham smile

Actually, as in my original post, I'm hoping Emna Wilson and Angelica Blake turn up, and Hep, and others, who haven't had a chance with the new disaster schedule

Oooh, you are so impatient Jonh ! It'll be ages yet before the draw is known. But a separate thread is a good idea, especially when you want to look back on the results next year.

Do you think Freya is injured? Or something?

It was weird not to see her in Nottingham in any shape or form

Was she not watching Katie with Jodie and Katie's coach?
