Weeks 22 and 23 - Grand Slam - Roland Garros, France - Main Draw - Clay

First time since 1979 that 3 British women have reached the second round of the French championships. That was the days of Wade and Barker and Hobbs

This time last year we had none in either draw and there was quite a bit of handwringing in the media about it but Dan Evans's comments at the time have been vindicated.

No real expectations Emma or Katie will get any further but Sonay has half a chance against Bouzkova if she plays as well as she did today. When was the last time we had three women in the Top 50? Does Sonay need another win to make it?

Sonay is currently showing as up to live ranked 49 for the next rankings, the post French Open 09/06 rankings.

She may need one more win to be top 50 then and I suspect that one more win will be enough ( I'm sure 2 more will be ). But it's still pretty unclear.

A light read re Emma and having Myah Petchey ('mini-mark' ) in the box - diehards on this forum will remember Myah in the junior threads (and changing tennis nationalities, I seem to remember?)

As well as Tom etc

A lot of talk again about all the Court Philippe Chatrier night matches so far being men's matches after it was I believe all but once last year.

One justification given is that a women's match could be over too quickly.

What I haven't heard suggested is how about scheduling 2 women's night matches with maybe a bit earlier start than 8.15 pm local? Where there's a will there's a way. I am not sure there is a will.

Iga would love to be out there under the lights

Tonight they could have had Swiatek and Sabalenka matches.

By the way, I initially wondered how the top 2 players ( as I presumed ) managed to be playing on the same day. I had totally missed that Iga had dropped from WR 2 to WR 5 after Rome and was thus seeded 5 here ( not picking up on it from draw posts ).

Sensibly took advantage of their opponents toilet break to have a chat with their coach.

I presume all the background noise is coming from court 14 where Quentin Halys has just levelled at one set all.

The girls are poised at 5-2 in the third set when the weather has disrupted proceedings.

Just when the TNT commentary team were wondering why they hadn't opened the roof on Philippe-Chatrier ! And now the court has been covered.

Sonay's first doubles match since October 2022! As at BJKC, Jodie showing herself adept at doubles. The British girls really look they enjoy playing together.

Talking of Sonay, I had not appreciated she had 13 tattoos. Soon to be 14!

Remembered reading a comment on Instagram some months back, Sonay posted a half hearted comment on Emma R/s feed about playing doubles. Wonder if she had been looking for a partner. Jodie and her seem a good match up potentially. Maybe we shall see them at Wimbledon?
