Yes, I think not speaking competent English is definitely a drawback - not easy for communicating with tournament referees, with doubles partners, a whole heap of things, really
She's not the only French player who struggles
And, for Elsa, she's always struck me as a girl who lacked a lot of confidence - very tall and gangly, not traditionally 'girly', I think she didn't enjoy being the centre of attention. The English problems probably made it even worse. Now, at 22, I think she's growing into herself . I know it's a bit daft but I think even the new fake eyelashes look speak volumes. Not making a direct comparions but players like Sonay are not dissimilar in that regard - maturity and confidence often comes in early to mid 20s, rather than age 17.
They stand a good chance of progressing further as well (just waiting for their next opponents to be decided), but after that it probably would be Andreeva and Schnaider in the QF
Meanwhile there's a third round match between French wild cards Boisson and Jacquemot. Which is something.
And one with good stories
Lois is young but she wasn't much as a junior
Lois was siddenly playing really well, getting results, and got her first MD wildcard last year
Her first real chance
And then, JUST before RG was due to start, she ruptured her ACL
Needed an operation, obviously, was out for about 8 months
And everyone felt so sorry for her
Elsa is a completely different kettle of fish
She's about the same age as Lois but Elsa was the real starlet of French tennis
She was world number 1 in juniors, she won RG juniors, the first French girl to do so for ages, everyone was expecting amazing things from her
And it was OK, but not brilliant, a perpetual disappointment really, but everyone saying, maybe next year it will click
And here we are now

Just to return to this, delighted to see Lois having a good run here. I have to admit, I'd never heard of her before "Smellygate," but then I watched the highlights of that match with Harriet, and I was blown away by how impressive her game was. She definitely didn't look like a player ranked in the 300s - many aspects of her game reminded me of a young Mauresmo, so stylish and creative with a lot of variety.
Would love to see her into the second week of RG, she has some serious game.

Boisson won in 3 sets to make the 2nd week in Paris,
