Anyone care to give some analysis on what changed?
Sorry, wasn't watching but a friend tells me that S had a fall in the second set (not a really bad one), and then her head went to pieces - just unravelled
Also an MTO (for a blister?)
But, again, don't think tha was really relevant - more like a chance to regroup
Anyone care to give some analysis on what changed?
I watched the third set
Sob was better, Fran was just outplayed
Fran played pretty well, she fought well
But Sob obviously got her head back in the right place, put the 'wobble' behind her, as the commentators said, and was now hitting lovely clean balls, really well placed, and Fran didn't really have an answer
Sorry Fran didn't make it and looks like there are 4 higher ranked players who also went out at the final qualifying round, so unless I am mistaken, I guess that means no chance of a lucky loser's spot. I think 4 go into a random draw for one spot, but Fran is I think the 6th highest ranked player to go out in the final round, so just outside that pot, unfortunately.
somewhat British interest even if she doesn't represent the UK, Joanne Garland is through to the final qualifying round too! I think this is her very first grand slam - good on her.
Super random anecdote, but every time I see Joanna Garland's progress, it's a bit of a head-spin, full circle moment for me. As a teenager (back when I started this forum) - I was competing for the junior team at my local club which was run by her dad.
He was a very decent player who used to compete a lot in over 35s, over 40s competitions. Big serve, good volleys, very aggressive player. We were once drawn in the first round of a local competition, when I was 14, on fast artificial grass where the ball barely skidded above your ankles - gave a me a complete, one-sided duffing.
He was always very invested in coaching juniors, and tried setting up a local academy in my area. Amazing that his daughter has gone on to be so good - though a definite loss that she's not competing for GB. Guessing that Taiwan spotted her promise and were willing to stump up more funding/support when she was younger, and it was the practical choice.
Nice anecdote Sheddie, and a great effort by Joanna to qualify. She was quite young when she decided to play for Chinese Taipei, no? I have vague memories of her competing in the younger age groups as a Brit.

Yeah amazing effort from her, especially on clay.
I think she qualifies to play for Chinese Taipei through her mum - but was at least partially based in the UK for a long time. Her accomplishments are still regularly described and discussed in my home town local newspaper, and tennis club website, which is nice.

First lucky loser spot went to Taylor Townsend when Belinda Bencic pulled out.
