Fran is a great player to follow - toughed it out again today. All the very best for the match tomorrow
Really difficult to assess Sobolieva's form/potential. She's had a few retirements this year and no standout results. However she beat Belgraver yesterday who had been in decent form. But a great opportunity for Fran if her body holds up.
And then Katie R1???
Sobolieva looked useful against Belgraver so won't be straightforward for Fran especially as her opponent has had a rest day.
somewhat British interest even if she doesn't represent the UK, Joanne Garland is through to the final qualifying round too! I think this is her very first grand slam - good on her.
Super random anecdote, but every time I see Joanna Garland's progress, it's a bit of a head-spin, full circle moment for me. As a teenager (back when I started this forum) - I was competing for the junior team at my local club which was run by her dad.
He was a very decent player who used to compete a lot in over 35s, over 40s competitions. Big serve, good volleys, very aggressive player. We were once drawn in the first round of a local competition, when I was 14, on fast artificial grass where the ball barely skidded above your ankles - gave a me a complete, one-sided duffing.
He was always very invested in coaching juniors, and tried setting up a local academy in my area. Amazing that his daughter has gone on to be so good - though a definite loss that she's not competing for GB. Guessing that Taiwan spotted her promise and were willing to stump up more funding/support when she was younger, and it was the practical choice.
Discovery+ is about £30 for the one month, which will give you all the French Open tennis - and the Champions League final - as well as all other Discovery+
It's not a bargain (like football-free Eurosport used to be, at about £8) but it's not off the scale
