Heather only has 5 points to drop from the remaining clay court tournaments from last year. Her next large drop is 30 points from Nottingham in June, so if she keeps playing she will rise even more.
And I agree, Heather will get her MDWC for Wimbledon - and probably others for the grass court season.
I didn't think a main draw wild card for Wimby was ever in doubt. She's still very popular with the public and media that, as long as she's in the top 200 and its not needed for others, I would think she would always get a main draw wild card.
It should be though. I like Heather and she's been a more than decent servant to GB tennis but it is time to look to the future now. She doesn't need the money and a wildcard for a younger player would give them some finances to invest in their future.
Yes she's done ok this week but let's be honest she's basically had to travel around the world to compete in a pretty low quality tournament which is fine and she's perfectly entitled to do so and you can only beat the player on the other side of the net.
I daresay she will get a load of wildcards to the other UK grass tournaments so the public will get plenty of chance to see her. I know this will be an unpopular opinion but as I'm generally against wild cards for the grand slams anyway, if we are going to have them I'd like to see them given to younger players to see if the money and experience can help future careers.
But I've long ago accepted that they are not going anywhere so we may as well use them very biasedly for home players as the other Slams do, with probably a mix of up and coming big prospects and still decently ranked much more established players. So I'd be absolutely fine with Heather, a player who has entertained and won MD matches in the past ( including L16 just 3 years ago ) getting a MD WC if top 200 and indeed likely to be one of our top 3 or 4 ranked players without a direct entry.
And although I normally would never rush home to watch a Heather match, I'd definitely give one to Heather for several reasons, some of which overlap:
(a) the crowd like her (or at least recognise her ....) - I was at one event, can't remember, and SO many people were saying to each other, when's Heather playing? Which court is Heather on? etc etc
(b) wildcards are not just to help up-and-coming players - sponsors, the press, the crowd .... all matter
(b) I'm a mega fan of juniors but I don't like the kick the can down the road approach, there's always something better just round the corner
(c) I think giving wildcards to older players sends a very good message to younger players - it shows that the bods will invest in your throughout your career, not just when you're a new young thing
Lily would be next in line, live ranked 244. Whilst others could be given a MDWC it would a real surprise if they won a match and possibly too much of a step up. But there may be too many that deserve a shot at qualifying, so there could be a surprise or two (such as Millie or Marni or the top juniors)
