Week 15 - 2025 Billie Jean King Cup Playoffs, The Hague, Netherlands - Indoor Clay

To be fair it's a big swing, something Anne has been criticised for not doing in the past. And given Louis is with the squad he must feel it's the right call. Maybe they think they can hit through Schuurs who's always surprised me being ranked so highly as I've never been that convinced watching her over the years.

I guess Anne's reasoning is to try and avoid a typical doubles game in which Shuurs would dominate and to try and overpower the Netherlands pair with our two hardest hitting players.

Well so far Annes gamble has paid off. The stronger players are hitting through the Netherlands double pairing. Great game. Jodie and Katie 5-2, first set. They need to do this in two.

Jodie finished the set with three good first serves. 6-2

Could this turn out to be one of the great inspired captaincy calls?

Yes I think that's exactly the tactic. And it makes sense. Two better singles players will usually come out on top, and they will have figured in a purer doubles contest using Harriet and Liv they are more likely to be second best.

They hold from *15-40 but then fail to take 40-0* as the Dutch get to deuce. But they take the next two points with perfect lobs.

*2-1

I just fact-checked a comment from Russel Fuller on the BBC text commentry

The last and only time Jodie and Katie bave played doubles together was at the Nottingham WTA250 in 2021, when they lost to Emily W-S and Beth Grey in a MTB.
Katie did actually play a lot of doubles ten years ago !

Very close at 5-1 30-0* but Katie fires a drive volley long at 30-15* on a point they should have taken before then and they'll need to serve for it.

*5-2

Wow! Burrage and Boulter should play more together! Would be a good team for Wimbledon!

They effectively turned it into a four player singles match, taking the doubles subtlety of Shuurs out of the game.
