Superb work from Katie. Set and a break down, dug in, eventually started to get in top of the slice and boss it a bit more. Couple of super returns to break for *5-3 and serves out to 15.
Yes she's got the balance from the back of the court right, Naomi C in commentary talking about her adding more shape to give her the control she was lacking for a set and a half.
Maria still dangerous but the bag of tricks isn't being pulled out any more which suggests she's getting flustered.
Really good by the end. Just kept getting better and better and blasted through the final set. Super hitting.
Straight head to head against Netherlands tomorrow, so nothing riding on the doubles but we could need it tomorrow so important for the girls to get a feeling playing together. But would have the German pair as favourites.
I watched Katie struggling to attack Tajana's slice shots and thought " Oh! if only she had the loop shot used in table tennis" then as I watched, she slowly got more and more whip on her topspin responses to the slice until she was totally dominating her opponents shots. Katie effectively developed the tennis equivalent of the loop shot as she played the match. Well done Katie. A great match to watch.
