Weeks 10&11 - WTA1000 - Indian Wells, USA Hard

I'm sure Emma won't read anything we post (and why should she); I'm just feeling her pain from what happened to her.

I wasn't sure whether to write this - but here goes... I've worked in retail for quite a few years and have twice had a lot of unwelcome persistent attention that lasted several months in one case and years in another. One case was from an elderly schizophrenic lady, who first kept coming on my till and loitering around near me - I wasn't too bothered, but then she found out where I lived and I kept seeing her hanging around outside my house, with her bike, and she also handed me incomprehensible bits of paper and asked me to deliver them to the little people. It never went beyond that and I think I managed to kill it, by being really rude to her, and after that she never went near me again - not how I would normally choose to deal with somebody mentally ill, but I needed to stop it escalating.

The second was a guy who came in to the petrol station, and after initially being friendly because we both swam at the swimming baths, I then realised he was hitting on me - getting out of the pool to follow me into the showers and changing room at the same time and trying to follow me in the pool, wearing snorkel goggles, so he could look at me, and he started saying that he wanted to take me on holiday to his yacht in Scotland - I am not even gay and gave him no come ons. It got to the stage that I seriously considered giving up swimming at the pool, despite it being one of my main hobbies.

Both those people had an effect on me - dreading seeing them at work and being very wary of making friendly conversation to people in case they thought I was trying to make sexual overtures.

My post was that I think Emma may have been quite emotionally affected by what happened, and I also agree that her swapping of coaches doesn't appear to be great and not wanting to enter qualies is not only a high risk strategy, but one that makes her look a bit of a brat, no matter what the truth of the matter.

Anyhow I just feel for Emma right now and have a feeling that her poor performance tonight may well be down to the stalking incidents.

Emma seemed to be hitting the ball up rather more than usual and it was landing well short of the lines which was giving her opponent too many options. One thing that did seem to be working well though was when Emma came to the net, she won several points with angled volleys.

Pure  coincidence  but  both Sonays  opponents in the main draw seem to have had drugs issues in the past,

So pleased for Sonay, although I did predict she would make the top 50 by the end of the year. I also had Emma in the top 20 which is looking a bit toppy at present but still a way to go!

Yes, good spot. Both contaminated supplements (in the second instance for Lepchenko).

But of course Lepchenko was more famous for testing positive for meldonium, but was let off as it was determined that it was the result of medication that was legal when she was taking it.

Also interesting is the fact that for her second violation, she came to an agreement with the ITF re length of ban when the case had gone to CAS. Not too dissimilar to Sinner, who has been accused of being treated differently.

For Haddad Maia, it's also a reminder that not all players who have tested positive remain under a cloud for the rest of their careers. Haddad Maia wasn't a big name at the time, hence it not being picked up on in the same way.

Well there's getting to be so many of them in the sport, how can you avoid them.

I totally agree with others on here that Emma must have been affected still by the stalking incident. Unless it has happened to you then you cannot know how that makes a person feel. I don't believe for a single second that she would not have had him on her mind and wondering if he was suddenly going to just pop up in the crowd. Anyway it was a bad result for her. I really wish she would enter qualies and more 250 events. Anything to get on a roll.

Perhaps; maybe quite likely

But there's no 'must' about it

It's perfectly possible that she just played a bad match, it happens, rather too often for comfort, too, both pre and post the stalker
