So our main draw entries are now

R1:- Emma Raducanu (GBR) WR55 v Moyuka Uchijima (JPN) WR52

R1:- Katie Boulter (GBR) WR38 [25] v Bye

R1:- Sonay Kartal (GBR) WR83 [LL] v Vavara Lepchenko (USA) WR124 [Q]

Think if two of Raducanu, Kartal, Fearnley and Norrie make it through that's a good return for the first round.

Then two of those, Boulter and Draper into three would be about par as well.

Pleased for Sonay. Fought hard in that last qualifying match.

It's not a bad draw for the first round of a WTA1000. Lepchenko is very experienced with two good wins in qualifying, but she is 38 and at the end of her career.

Me too, been rooting for her for years, hoping that she'll get that breakthough.

Me too. She was always the slightly awkward outsider, when the youngsters gathered together at junior and early stage adult tournies. You sort of felt for her - she seemed to see the world (and her tennis) slightly differently - it attracted me to her, and her game

Of course, you coudl say she's already got that breakthrough, Helen - after all, she's about WR 80 now - it's a great achievement (but, yes, let's hope she's on the way up even more)

Indeed, having had a CH 195 going into 2024, you certainly can say she broke through last year. Big tournaments - her Wimbledon R3 and Tunisia WTA 250 title with the rankings rise that came largely on the back of these.

While hey, it would be great to see her keeping on rising, I actually think that consistency and ranking consolidation would in themselves be not too bad at all this year. She is still just 23 yo.

Indian Wells does not seem to be a happy hunting ground for GB women (Emma excepted) recently. At least we'll have another name to add for doubles.

Doubles draw is out

L32:- Tereza Mihalikova (SLO) / Olivia Nicholls (GBR) CR90 (48+42) v Anna Danilina (KAZ) / Irina Khromacheva (***) CR31 (17+14) [7]

Head to head is 0-2, 5&4 in Qatar in February and 4&4 in the USO in 2024

$19k for the pair just for making the draw.

They seem to get drawn to seeds in the big events!

That was my immediate reaction without checking anything. Certainly lately.

It does seem to happen in the bigger events, particularly when all the top players are present. The eighth seeds at IW have a CR of 34 whereas Liv and Tereza are CR90 and well down the entry list. But they got direct entry which shows they are heading in the right direction and there are a whole bunch of players not far ahead.

These new on screen graphics are another WTA fail. I can't just glance at them to get the score I have to look and process what it says. And the names are unreadable. My brain is not registering the i in Kvitova's name it's so close to the v. It's not a good idea to use narrow fonts with little spacing between them to get information across quickly. If I struggle with them I don't know how someone with a reading difficulty/disorder can read them. Have they not heard of a UX researcher/designer?
