Only caught a little bit of the match - the court looked very slow to me - and Jodie's serve nowhere to be found.
IW is always very slow
Yes, I was aware - I just thought it seemed even slower than usual ! But then after Doha, Dubai and Austin I suppose it was inevitable to think this.
They've changed the court surface to Laykold this year, supposedly to give a consistent surface with Miami and the US Open. I've seen a few photos from players showing the courts as being very sandy.
Sonay's opponent looks a potential banana skin - already WR 114 at the age of 20 with a recent win over Cirstea to her credit....
Sonay won 6-2 6-2
Yes, I clearly need to have more faith in Sonay
Would be great to see her build up a bank of wins at this level to keep herself in the top 100 so she isnt too dependent on her Wimbledon and Monastir points.
The change should have speeded the courts up a little but from the bits of tennis I saw it's not been by very much! Looks like they are still putting plenty of sand in the top layer of paint which combined with the desert conditions is keeping it all a bit sluggish.

Post the event, TEnnis Abstraft will run a surface speed rating update, which is using mens data as the proxy bit clearly it is the same court for all.
This is the current list, showing IW as much slower than average and Miami daster. 1 being average. Dubai is a lot faster than Doha also
the measure uses aces served versus expected aces given the players in the field and their quality on serve and return. As opposed to using a formal measuring device.
Indian Wells and Doha are two of the slowest hardcourt tournies on the tour. The indoor, grass and summer hard court events tend to be the quicker ones.
Its not a perfect measure but its pretty good and compares well with most peoples instinct.
Yeah, it's good to see Jodie back competing at this level again, but on courts as slow as IW, she'd have to be playing close to her best to have a shot. Hopefully she can rest up and come back ready to attack Miami qualies
