Which she fluffed, unfortunately - but at least she's in the set and it's 'worth watching' now

clearly tightened up serving for the set and gave that game away

And then it did really go pear-shaped, you were right, Neil Gee

Rybakina is really Katie's Bete Noire. Sad to see Rybakina walk through that first set and win in straight sets again against Katie. On the other hand, Sonay's form is surprising lots of us on here - feels like she is really maximising her potential right now, and agree with other posters that her rise in the rankings to vie with Emma might be a good thing for both of them.

Well done to Sonay for her efforts so far and commiserations to Katie - hope she can avoid Rybakina in the draws of tournaments. I had a bad feeling about this one, as soon as I saw the draw for IW.

Should have taken it to three but think Rybakina would have got herself back together anyway.

Still, first tournament back. She got to the third round. No complaints.

Katie just looked like she didn't believe she could win .. which she won't without belief

I'm sure if Katie had won we would all be jumping about. She reached her seeded position and lost to a top ten player - no surprise, although the first set score was disappointing.

While it might be interesting to see Sonay "vie" with Emma for rankings position, presumably no-one really thinks she vies with her in ability at their best or absolute potential to be a top 20, maybe top 10 ranked player for a sustained period ( Emma was briefly WR 10, cleary hugely due to her US Open triumph ). So whether they would truly be rivals is questionable.

And I do really like Sonay and wish her all the best. Could she be a top 50 player?

Undoubtably Emma has the higher potential. Im not convinced however that at the end of this year she will be ranked much higher than Sonay, Harriet or Jodie. I hope Im wrong. Unless of course that means that all are in the top 30!!

I'm pleased for Sonay but I doubt Emma's suddenly thinking she must up her game in response to Sonay's success. Every player is on their own path and Sonay has been able to climb the rankings without any of the pressure or attention focused on Emma since 2021 (Emma has 2.6m followers on Instagram, Sonay less than 9,000).

I do hope they are both in the next BJK Cup squad though.

QF:- Tereza Mihalikova (SVK) / Olivia Nicholls (GBR) CR90 (48+42) v Anna Kalinskaya (***) / Caty Mcnally (USA) CR1230 (133+1097 but CH49+11) [WC]

Kalinskaya and Mcnally put out Dabrowski and Routliffe the #2 seeds 7-6 7-5

I actually forgot Sonay was still in Indian Wells, which I suppose shows how far under the radar she has gone so far, but I have been pleasantly surprised by reading of her success this morning.

And thanks Coup for the updates on Katie's second set although I don't think it was down to K playing any better: the wheels just fell off for Rybakina for most of it.

So pleased for Sonay. No fuss, no fanfare, contending with major injuries, planning her schedule carefully, but now being competitive at the highest level. Not easy when you aren't that tall and don't have major weapons, but maximising her ability to great effect.

Not that easy when you are not that tall but think Jasmine Paolini   who is not that tall but was good enough to reach successive Grand Slam finals on different surfaces.

When Sonay won her 2nd round match it did not get a report in the Telegraph just the result. The Daily Mail had one sentence.Yet Simon Briggs  contributed a big article on Emma's first round loss. Emma seemingly breaking Wimbledons clothing rules also merited  a piece on the Mail on Sunday. The Telegraphs tennis reports could be  renamed Emma's page  as that  is all it appears these days. Andy Murray in his prime never merited  as much Telegraph  coverage as Emma .

More importantly, Ms Raducanu has an eighty-one page individual thread on this forum, compared to Ms Kartal's seven pager.
