George has now got to the last 8 of all 3 winter M25 events in Britain - playing Ben next, youd think he stands a chance of going further. And maybe play Liam in the semis; Anton and Arthur could clash in the other semi.
I'm going to Roehampton tomorrow, just checking is it open to public? And is it the same venue as during the summer?
I went today - yes, all open and at the NTC
Nice! Hope you had a good time!
Certainly did
The NTC is very swish, all nice wood, heated, excellent canteen - and, of course, you not only get to see good matches but you see a lot of players and coaches etc walking around
There was Joe Salisbury, Felix Gill, Hannah Klugman, Marni, Harriet, Sonay, and more .... all chatting, getting their lunch, messing around, doing whatever they're doing
The matches were super too - because quasi-frenchie Arthur played extremely well, George Loffers was cracking the ball, Liam and opponent were yelling their heads off but Liam shouted just that bit louder when it mattered , Ben found his way to another third set TB win (and it wasn't just servebot either), Anton was cracking the ball too (and trying out some fancy net play)..... only Henry Searle's result was a disappointment and he still reminds me 100% of a puppy - potential to be a great 'dog' but still a little uncoordinated, over excitable, head all over the place, at the moment
Saw some mums too Arthur's mum must have lived in London for 25 years or however long but still looks 100% French - unmistakeable Anton's mum was there too (it MUST have been his mum surely, big apologies if not, but SO like him and acting like a mum ), and various coaches I know, and ones I don't
A great day out and a very good standard of tennis - far better overall standard than the women's W50(?) in March last year which was the last time I was at the NTC, I think.
What do you make of Liams game, CD? Do you think there are signs he can climb back up the rankings?
Sorry, Jon, Liam's match was the only one I didn't really watch - it was on the far court and I was watching Arthur and Henry on the first two courts
(I definitely heard his match though )
Just my feeling, but I'm not expecting him to climb back up to where he was in the rankings, no.
no worries - glad you got to hear him! I fear you are right, but it would be good to see him maybe push back to grand slam qualies level. Although I dont expect it. Maybe Liam and Dan will give doubles a go!? Are they even friends?!
Interesting that folk do occasionally speculate about such as Liam and Dan, and Heather from our women, switching to doubles. But when last did one of our relatively declining top ranked singles players switch to being a doubles specialist late in their careers?
I don't think I'm missing anyone obvious?

Youre correct , I cant think of anyone either to be honest. I think it is maybe not wanting then to jack it all in and thinking doubles may be a stepping stone, but very few players globally do it, let alone Brits
If your going to do it you probably need to build up your doubles ranking before your singles rankings drops. That's what players like Granollers, Mahut, Zeballos, Dodig, Ram etc did. If Evo did it now he'd have to win about 10 challengers to get to GS level.
I have a sense that Heather doesn't want to play doubles only, and I understand that as someone who has won 4 WTA titles, and at her best was still playing close to Top 100 tennis. The issue she now has is that her two big doubles counters of 2024 have dropped, so she is now ranked in the 90s as opposed to 40. But her singles ranking is below 200, so she's going to have to make a choice.
