Weeks 3 & 4 - Australian Open - Melbourne, VIC, Australia (hard)

For the record:

L32:  (2) Alexander Zverev (GER) WR 2 defeated Jacob Fearnley WR 92 by 3, 4 & 4  cry

Disappointing, but not a bad effort & certainly no disgrace.

Write the second set off. Winning the first one is more impactful.

Id be interested to know if there is any correlation in a 5 set match on if winning one of the previous sets is more statistically impactful - obviously winning set 5 is 100% aligned! - I have genuinely often wondered but never seen any stats

In the extremely small sample size of Draper / Vukic 2025 Aus Open matches, the winner of the first set has lost 3 matches out of 4.

JD loses the set.  This match is an excellent spectacle. Whilst at 2-1 up, Vukic is the fav, I do not write of Jack.

Back to back DFs cost Jack the break at 5-5. There was excelent play by both in the ffollowing game, but Vukic held serve and took the set

So Jack will have to go 5 sets again to win.

6-4 2-6 5-7

In my same sample ( more positively! ) the winner of the third set ( to go 2 sets to 1 up ) has lost 4 matches out of 4.

Comment by Jonathan Jurejko in the Beeb's live text commentary on the match:

Judging by the amount [ouch!] of flags, shirts and scarves around Melbourne Park, looks like half of the city's Serbian huge community have pitched up tonight.  Novak Djokovic was, of course, the star attraction. But thousands of Serbs have stayed around for Olga Danilovic's match against Jessica Pegula and, if they're not on Laver, to watch Vukic against Draper on the big screens.

Vukic, as you would have guessed by his name, has Serbian and Montenegrin heritage.  Massive cheers from the fans outside as he break Draper's serve.

Then:

Jack Draper shouts a four-letter expletive as he sits down on his chair at the changeover before the 12th game.  Then, to the delight of the Aussie fans, nukes his racquet.  The pressure of the situation has seen Draper explode.  And the home crowd, now more oiled and more excitable, love it.

And:

There are boos from the Melbourne crowd towards Jack Draper. His antics with the racquet have delayed Aleksandar Vukic from taking his serve to try and wrap up the third set.  But it doesn't seem to have affected the world number 68 one bit as he lands a blistering ace. What pressure?!

Followed by:

Perhaps a wise move for Jack Draper to go back to the locker room and cool off.  Maybe a quick splash of icy water round the chops can bring clarity to his mind.  He gives some to the crowd before he does so, though, waving his arms in the air and grabbing his left knee.

(my bold)

Don't like the sound of those last four words!

Nope. Still too good by Vukic. Admirable general level.
