Geneaology

Anyone interested in tracing their family tree ?

Started my tree a month ago.....now got 103 names in my tree....just found out the names of my Great Great Great Grandparents.....one of them was a railway labourer in India (Born in Glasgow) and died in 1886 !!!!!

Great websites if you want to start off......

www.genesreunited.com

www.1837online.com (England & Wales searches)

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ (Scotland searches)

If you do want to do this.......be prepared to find things out that might be a surprise !!!

Wow that's amazing Drew !!! Especially as your surname is very common !

How far have you got back to ?

A railway worker in India, that must have given you a surprise. How did he come to be in India, do you know ?

With my great-uncle, I've traced my Dad's mother's family tree back to 1740. The surname is Michelmore - in the ancient Cornish tongue it means something to do with St Michael, can't remember exactly what offhand.

On my Dad's side, I haven't traced it back much - to about 1820. My surname is derived from coxon - which is the title for one of the sailors on a large ship - so that was the profession of my ancestors if you go right back to the start of the family tree. My ancestors on my Dad's side were something to do with selling wool - the flock industry in the 1800s. My great, great, great, great grandfather apparently was quite wealthy, unfortunately his son squandered all the money through drink - blasted man

I`be been into genealogy for a couple of years now. I`ve traced the family tree back to the 1600s on my mother`s side, and the maternal part of my dad`s side. Unfortunately my dad`s paternal side is much more difficult to trace as my grandfather was adopted before legal adoption came in so there`s no papers. We don`t know anything about his parents so there`s a huge chunk of family history missing there.  He was very dark-skinned and all the clues we have from other family members point to him being from Argentinian heritage originally. That would make sense, as when my dad had to go to hospital in Spain a few years ago (on holiday) they had a totally different way of pronouncing my surname.

This is precisely the sort of stuff I enjoy.

Will save the links. Thanks a lot.

Strange to see an ancestor of yours coming to India.

Obviously my family history is not there, and it is really confusing if truth be told.
We are not originally from the place of the country where we live. Our family came here over 400 years ago.

No idea about anything more.

From what I have been told my Great Great Great Grand Father on my Mothers side went to help build the railway in India as part of the expanding British Empire ! He died doing it when his daughter was only 3 or 4. (My GG Grand Mother). She then came back to Glasgow.

That's really fascinating Drew !! Did you find out all that information just through those search websites ? Have you got any further and are you looking to make contact with those long-lost relatives ?

Re Sally's post: Wow, reaching the 1600s with your family treee is really amazing ! Not many people get that far back. That's very interesting what you said about your ancestors possibly being Argentinian, thinking about it now, your surname does sound quite Latinesque !

How far back have you got Arky ?

It was a fantatstic day yesterday....arrived at 1.00pm...very nerve racking to start with but we had a great BBQ, nice wine....and as it turned out great company....such a bizarre feeling to meet brothers and sisters who have been on the planet for 50/60 years and you never knew a thing ???....they left at 7.00pm full of good food / wine and all agreed that we must do it again soon....hopefully not at our house....it must have cost £200 for the day !!!

A big thanks to genesreunited...without their web site...we would never have met...through it we exchanged phone numbers and I meet one of my sisters two weeks ago for lunch...it went on from there !

Great to hear that the day went well Are all of you living in Scotland quite near each other ?

Genesreunited is a fantastic resource, my mum is half-irish and she wants to track that side of the family and we're planning to go there next year. It will be difficult as unfortunately a lot of the records in Ireland are missing or have been destroyed.

Did you have a feeling that there were some relatives who you would be able to track ? Must have been a really massive shock when you found out !!

My 'sisters' both live in Scotland, one in Glasgow the other in Dundee. The youngest of my new 'brothers' lives in Glasgow also. The oldest is in Leicester.

Still getting used to the idea...so much time to catch up on....was on the phone for an hour to 'Irene'....my big sister !
