Week 5 - 2025 Davis Cup Qualifiers, first round - JPN vs GBR - Miki, Japan (indoor hard)

9vicman's request is my command...  wink

Hope I've got the week right!  GBR, seeded 10th, is away to Japan (unseeded), which, as the host, has the choice of venue & opted for the Bourbon Beans ( rolleyes.gif ) Dome in Miki (273 miles, as the crow flies, SW of Tokyo).  The tie will be played from 31st January to 1st February.  The 13 winning teams will advance to the Qualifiers second round (to be played in the week commencing 8th September), the losers playing in World Group I.

Initial nominations:

Japan: Nishioka, Daniel, Nishikori, Watanuki, Yuzuki
GB: Norrie, Fearnley, Harris, Skupski

Up to 3 nominations (including additions) can be changed until draw day.

Presumably Smith only named x4 players to assess Draper or because he is unsure about a second dubs player.

Looking at AO form, Patten and Glasspool look to be ahead of Skupski and I'd thought that Patten was quite impressive last time out for GB.

although Julian cash may also have something to say about that!

When does Leon need to confirm the final team by, anyone?

Nominations deadline is 10days prior to first day of play for 'play off' matches according to rules. So that's tomorrow I think..
Changes to this can be made however to limited extent upto day before I think.

Much as Id love to see Leon shake it up and select Julian and or Henry and Lloyd and take out Neal (sorry Neal) Im pretty certain he wont. Assuming he keeps Neal, it seems the 5th player choice is down to Henry or Dan. Dan probably makes sense if we expect hed play singles, as well as doubles, but his form is so poor, I cant see Leon selecting him. Joe seems to be equally out of form and/or not at full health or fitness? Which seems to leave Henry - which is fine!- as the only option? Neal and Henry played last match of the DC Finals group stage last year together, and won a dead rubber, but that suggests Leon has that pairing in his mind.

I may have it wrong though and Julian/ Lloyd or Julian/Henry would be something Id like to see (I believe Julian and Henry are still friends from posts Ive seen somewhere on here?).

Final team is an hour before the draw.

i guess though they will know way in advance - in order to get players to Japan, acclimatised, practiced etc, allow players not picked to play somewhere else - they dont want to be getting players there last second! So the team will be known well ahead of then? As in the 5 man squad that travels

Doubles is going to be key in this tie, as I'm expecting Nishkori to win both singles rubbers.

I'd hope it was Lloyd and Julian as they're the most in form actual pair. Been drastically better than Neil and Joe so far. I don't think Henry will play but don't quote me on that quite yet.

Patten was again outstanding overnight in the dubs, I just watched highlights back. Brilliant serving, he has to be on that flight to Japan. Progressing to later stages of both mixed and men's dubs demonstrates his durability, first choice for me, a case of who plays with him.

It's a good point, it has to be Patten and Skupski, did well enough last September. Evans was poor in Manchester in 24 despite heroics in 23.

Agree re Kei and re dubs being vital. But LPats has a good point (note their name, related to Henry I believe!) in that a) Lloyd and Julian really are in form right now b) a consistent pair and would probably be an ideally better choice than Neal and Henry c) presumably Julian and Henry isnt an option.

I assumed Leon would stick with Neal above but if Neal is out of form and Leon is prepared to change him , then Julian and Lloyd is a our best pair.

Henry is our best player though at the moment, for sure, and bang in form.
