Katie Boulter was ranked 124 at the end of 2022 and before that happened, a lot of people felt that with injuries and aged 26, she had missed her chance to make the big time. When she made it to finish at 58 in the rankings in 2023, it was a big push that caught lots of people by surprise.
In the rankings competition on here, many people thought she would drop heavily in the rankings last year, but instead, she solidified her game and finished the season ranked 23. Again lots of people on her are predicting that she has peaked and will fall back again this year, but I see a player who is now fit, lean and aggressive - who takes the game to her opponents rather than waiting for things to happen or for her opponent to make a mistake.
All in all, I think 2024 was a breakthrough year for Katie, she cemented her place in the top 100 easily and now is getting really competitive against the best. Her very close three set match in the United Cup against Swiatek last week shows where she is at and for me, her performances make her the stand out female player of last season - wins in San Diego and Nottingham and going close in Hong Kong and Tokyo indicate that improvement and overall quality. Hopefully next will be a real tilt at a Grand Slam.
