RE: Week 2 - Australian Open Men's Qualifying - Melbourne (outdoor hard)

Just to clarify - Dan is great in front of crowds and can play to the crowd to get him going.
Today, he had a big empty stadium and he was trying alsorts to try and motivate himself, but I suspect his ranking drop and drop to challengers will make it more and more difficult to get his mojo going.

Dan cares about the money (and he's right)

I don't think he'll ever have a problem getting his mojo going when there's a big payday at stake

Whether he can bring himself to do all the training, in the down moments, that's needed, is another matter

But I think he was trying his damnedest today - maybe not playing his best - which annoys him - but certainly trying hard - he knows these are the events that change the sums for the year

To my mind, there is noissue with Dan's motivation. He really wanted this match. Modern elite  tennis is a game of tiny, tiny margins. For whatever reason, and I thik it is imperceptible to all of us, his level is not what it was a year ago.

He moves on to Portugal next week. He is racking up the airmiles with not much to show for it.

Agreed - it is not poor motivation at all. Whether he has lost some power, foot pace around court, or whatever, it is a marginal loss that is showing in poor results. Sadly though, they are sustained over a long period, he hasnt been on form for longer than 12 months. My worry is can he ever get it back, age is probably part of it as well.

I agree that age is probably part of it. Dan is 34, there are only 19 players in the top 200 who are 34 or older. I really, really hate to say this, but I don't think the chances of him turning things around are particularly high. I do think that he has the skill set to become a doubles specialist - great precision and super fast hands. Is this what he wants though?

And Dan breaks back and holds!

Yeah, I can watch all of Eurosport for a whole month. Just need to cancel at the end of the month, which I neglected to do a few years ago. One month turned into nearly a year!

Yesp, I've got the same system for Discovery+

It's a bargain - but, yep, you have to put 'CANCEL TV' in your google calendar ! biggrin

Allez, Dan !

You don't have to remember. Just cancel immediately after subscribing. You'll still get the time you paid for. Just a tip...

Seriously, the men don't seem to have read the right script

Paul hasn't played since the start of November though - it was always going to be a bit random

But well done to Billy, just.....

And maybe Jan can join him

Well apart from Lily who went down fighting hard, we have two ladies through and Fran looking to make it a third.

Indeed the ladies have really given it their all! At least Billy got through. Really felt Paul would win.
