Off the back of the World Cup, we are into a few big weeks of Series 1 level events in Europe (Rome, Barcelona, Royan) as prep for Roland Garros.
This week is the Rome event, a $70k event (one of the biggest events on tour outside the slams) and we have Alfie, Gordon and Andy Penney going in a 12 man field - there is a women's event but there are no Brits in that (no quad event this week).
Alfie and Gordon are seeded 1 and 4 respectively and get byes. Andy Penney is in round 1 action against Dutchman Tom Egberink, for the right to play Alfie.
The entry in the mens seems to be players who werent in the World Cup last week, presumably some of those World Cup players will appear in Barcelona and Royan.
The other seeds are Spain's De La Puente, and Argentina's Fernandez; In essence, Tokito Oda, WR1, is the main one of the top 5 missing
Andy P lost and so it is Egberink who will play Alfie.
According to the OOP, the R1 and QF matches are all due to be played today, which seems an advantage to the higher seeded players who won't have played earlier.
Alfie and Gordon both in to third sets in what appear big battles.
Alfie has a 30-19 career h2h on Gustavo and 10-6 on clay, and beat him in Munich a few weeks back on clay, but Gustavo has a break up at 3-2 here in this final set.
Gordon and Spaargaren are one set all and starting the third just now.
In Barcelona, Gordon is the only Brit. Alfie has pulled out - I noticed he and Gordon withdrew from their Rome doubles final so Alfie must have picked an injury up. Hope he recovers for Paris.

Although not in singles, Alfie has turned up here in doubles only with Gordon. Presumably over whatever ailed him in Rome, maybe taking it easy to fully recover by playing doubles.
However, Gordon and Alfie pulled out of the doubles, second event in a row and suggests something is wrong with Alfie. I hope he isnt a doubt for the French Open.
Gordon was thrashed in his semi by de la puente. Gordon not had the best of clay circuits so far, the tour moves onto Open de Royan I. France next week, another series 1 event- not sure which Brits are playing- before the French Open the week after.
