GB is the only country with 3 teams left in the 4 sets of semis; we may in fact be the only team with 4 or Brazil may join us on 3. Either way, we have shown to have the strongest range and depth here, something to be pleased about - well done Team GB, so far.
GB start well as Lucas John De Gouveia wins his opening singles against Luna Gryp (Luna is the world third ranked girl) - as mentioned these are mixed events although GB has an all boys squad.
Next up Ruben Harris plays Alex Lantermann - the Belgian is ranked higher than Ruben and won their last 3 matches incl a few weeks ago in Belgium where he won very comfortably. So Ruben is up against it, but we have one singles in the bag and it could come down to doubles, where it feels like a 50/50 match.
The women's semis are underway also - in the opening singles, Cornelia lost 3 and 1 to her much higher ranked opponent; Lucy goes next against world number 1, Kamiji, and I think it feels likely we will need to resort to a bronze medal match in the womens. In the other semi, the Dutch lead France 1-0 and should see it through, meaning we most likely will have the bronze match against France
Thanks Indy - we have surpassed expectations to get 4 teams this far, but none of them would have been expected to take a title at the start. The mens is severely weakened by not having Alfie and Gordon, for reasons I know not, and wont win over Japan, probably. Quad team is definitely weaker than NL team and probably wont get a title. Its down to the Junior team to beat the USA if we they can. Going to be interesting tomorrow.
The quad men could beat Brazil, however, and make the final.
The junior final is hard to call- the USA juniors have two girls in the team and its hard to know how they match up versus our boys; our top boy, Ruben, is ranked above their top nominated player, Maximus Wong, so we could take that.
The number two singles has a British boy versus a very good American girl; and then it would be doubles. Hard to call!
Our players have never played their two girls according to ITF records. And our lads are aged 12-14 depending on who they pick as number two - Matt Knoesen is ranked second for us but aged 12, sabina Czauz is 18! So its going to be interesting. The two number ones have no head to head record either.
I suspect we will go with Lucas John De Gouveaia as our number two (although ranked 4) and he will play Sabina Czauz. Ruben will head our line against Wong BUT although ranked higher, Ruben lost today to the Belgian who in turn lost to Wong the other day.
Theres a very good chance doubles will decide this.
