Tennis though is clearly one of the most widely played sports in the world, played to a pretty competitive level by most countries, and many sports certainly can't say that. Though yes of course senior / open success is generally more worthy than junior success for similarly competitive sports.
Just as I don't equate similar titles within tennis ( ie. a similar title is generally not such a stand out to me in each of senior singles, senior doubles, juniors or wheelchair, with as a starting point senior singles leading the way and wheelchair lagging - much as I admire its competitors and our winners ), then being say a world champion doesn't equate for me between different sports - it would for me be a mixture of the competive nature of the different sports and the individual stories.
The BBC have fallen in.love with Keely Hodgkinson she is a fantastic athlete but sometimes the likes of Steve Cram builds her up with so.much you wonder why the rest of the field run.
Keeleys achilles heel is her 400 metres flat speed is not up to the standard of Athing Mu )
Good thing her 800m PB is quicker than Mus then wink
for me, Id vote for Alex Yee - but thats a personal bias as I love triathlon, and think Alex is a great ambassador for sport and a good personality as well as a lovely guy. won a gold medal in an epic finish and also the world triathlon series (so world champion) as well.
Alax has managed to hide his personality pretty well in the limited amount I have seen him being interviewed. Seems quite a shy lad but no doubt a very nice guy
Whatever, much much more to the Sports Personality award. than personality
( LordBrownof wrote: Agreed. Alex for me too. The triathlon was the highlight of the Olympics for me - that finish!! )
Well, maybe after Tom Pidc0ck's finish in the mountain biking! Both guys all out for it ( after Tom came back from a puncture ) and what a pass whereas there was an element of the leader falling back into Alex's grasp.
Still, great attitude and perseverance from Alex after he felt he went through a rough patch, and he put himself in position. And great year overall.
I love my darts, will watch pretty much all the TV events on Sky and ITV4 throughout the year, and Littler has been great this year, bringing a lot of attention and media to a fairly niche sport with his age and bursting on to the scenes, but him winning would feel a bit weird when he didn't win the main tournament of the year, especially when the world #1 won it, who just happens to be British as well.
Had Littler been as old as he looked then he would have been nowhere near a nomination even had he won the world championship back in January, just like how fellow Brits Anderson, Cross, Price, Wright, Smith and now Humphries weren't in recent years.
I'd have hoped Keely won anyway, but as it's realistically a 2 horse race, I do hope she takes it.
I was a little surprised Lando Norris wasnt nominated - maybe mclaren will be in shortlist for team of the year?
I think 6 is a bit too small a shortlist, especially when selected for us by a committee from the great and the good of the sports media.
Mark Cavendish and James Anderson are two I would point to ( but no chance of 2 cricketers in a shortlist of 6 ) and I am sure other folk would point to further 'omissions'. I would have a shortlist of 10 which is what I think it was until recent years.
