SPOTY 2024

I am transferring over  SPOTY posts from Mika's individual player thread rather than continue discussions there ( we'd followed on to posts about her not on the list for young SPOTY )

Emma wins the US Open and becomes Sports Personality of the Year, Mika wins the Junior version but doesn't even make the Young SPOTY longlist.

Given Henry Searle was similarly snubbed after winning the Wimbledon boys title last year you have to wonder if the Beeb have a problem with Junior tennis, too posh for them

Not sure but either way, Luke Littler will win this

Yes, trying to take our natural tennis bias out of it, the case for Mika does seem really strong.

As a bit of an aside, I am a bit shocked that Luke Littler is showing as very clear 2nd favourite at 9/2 for the main award ( voted for by the public which I don't think Young SPOTY is ). Keely Hodgkinson is 1/5 favourite, Mark Cavendish 3rd at 22/1.

Im surprised Keely is such a strong favourite if it is voted for by the public! She is a great athlete but not sure her profile is that amazing? Littler's profile is high, so not surprised at all to see him up there. But usually, in an Olympic year, a gold medallist wins it - are there any others in the mix from the betting odds?

The first test is getting on the list the public get to choose from which has been much shorter in recent years. That list to my mind has been rather idiosyncratic with some strange omissions and inclusions.

Gosh, the 3 of those you mentioned are well ahead, Alex Yee coming in 4th at 40s.

quite stunned how clear Keely is tbh, there you go.

I put an 80/1 each way ( place 1 or 2 ) on James Anderson when he retired from test cricket ( Stuart Broad was 2nd last year though of course that was a non Olympic year - Mary Earps won it which I had already forgotten with KJT 3rd ).

I dont see what the surprise is with Keeley Hodgkinson when she wins this.
She was the only athletics gold medallist for GB in the Olympics and the 800 m is such a huge event.
As for Mika Its just a junior event. Im sure all the other nominated athletes won world junior events and also didnt get nominated.

I assume he means on the track because Alex Yee would have something to say about that.

I guess my surprise with Keely is two fold. One that she appears such a clear favourite, not that she is one of the candidates so much; but secondly, I always personally see this as a mix of being a great sportsperson and having a big profile and I just didnt see that Keely has that sort of profile at large - but that maybe just me not really watching a lot of TV!!

The BBC have fallen in.love with Keely Hodgkinson she is a fantastic athlete but sometimes the likes of Steve Cram builds her up with so.much you wonder why the rest of the field run.

Keeleys achilles heel is her 400 metres flat speed is not up to the standard of Athing Mu
