Week 49 - ITF W50 Tampa, USA - Clay

Just for info, Hannah is the definite betting outsider in today's match

Wakana 1.5
Hannah 2.5

Normally, the betting pretty much follows the ranking - but Wakana is a lot lower WTA ranked than Hannah (and about the same in juniors)

And I don't think the odds are really a pro-vote for Sonobe - she's not had any realy victories of note in the last couple of months - her juniors performance was pretty middle-of-the-road - quite a few losses to players younger than here - like Burcescu and Suha Lee - and nothing in adults either

I think the odds are more a reflection of general feeling about Hannah, and the disappointment from last week in Merida

And the betting sites indeed completely failed to take into account that Wakana is the opponent, it's not just a Hannah bet

Have taken half of it off though - as the odds have collapsed - and you never know with tennis

Hannah serving for the first set at 5-2

Sonobe got it back to 5-4 but then Hannah served well, two unreturned/unreturnable serves, and she takes the first set 6-4

L16:- Hannah Klugman (GBR) WR613/JR12/15yo [JE] def Wakana Sonobe (JPN) WR855/JR8/16yo [WC] 6-4 6-4

Good win for Hannah. Wakana might have a lower WTA ranking, but has a higher Junior ranking.

QF:- Hannah Klugman (GBR) WR613/JR12/15yo [JE] v Caty McNally (USA) WR766/CH=54 in May 2023 [WC]

It was a pretty scrappy match

And with lots of swings of momentum

But Hannah won 6-4 6-4

And can NOW try out her tennis on one of Lambda's proper adult professionals

(Also a wonderful little earner which will now fund my wildly optimistic forays into other matches )

Hannah had a long wait today - the match before lasted 3 hours and 42 minutes.

Yes, that was one of my takeaways too - looking back, and ignoring the team event, I think it's the first time she's won two matches in an adult event since Wimbledon qualis and since August in juniors - that's a long time not to string two wins together

Hannah lot 6-3 6-4

Fair score

She had a good chance in the second set - she was 4-2 up and definitely 'shouldn't' have given up all four games like that

McNally knew exactly what to do - killed Hannah with dropshots and getting her to play too short and then making her pay
