Week 46 - 2024 Billie Jean Cup Finals, Malaga - Indoor Hard

I don't think questions on Fran's fitness to play needs to be answered to be selected. Her knowledge and skill of playing on clay will be extremely valuable in practice sessions, in suggesting plays during the ties and I'm sure she'd be an excellent motivator.

If not playing, Fran would be perfect as the on court coach (or sitting behind Anne .. )

Yes, but you can do that without using up a spot in the selection

What would be very silly would be to take Fran, as one of the five players, on the understanding that she's not going to play as she needs rest, and then, when there, the buzz of the place makes her want to give it a go

Obviously if she's A1 fine, this doesn't apply. But if she's not then, like Emma, you don't want to play and risk injury/illness and just going to support and coach would make a lot of sense - if she wants to do that

How is Sonay on the dirt? Has she played a BJK tie before?

On Insta Fran blames a lack of acclimatisation time. She says no damage and looks to be back on track in a couple of days.

Was in the squad vs the Czech Republic in 2022 but didn't play. Has won 2 ITF titles on clay and reached another final.

If Fran recovers in time i'd play her and Sonay in singles instead of Katie but I highly doubt Annie K would do it.

I would definitely pick Heather.

More experience than anybody, plays both singles and doubles, has no problem with clay, and a good cheerful team player.

Jodie joins the squad. I'm not entirely sure to what end as I can't see her being considered as singles back up, doesn't have much doubles pedigree and isn't a clay courter which can be useful for hitting. But anyway, that's our team back to 5 for next week.

To me, that's more likely a reflection on Fran and Sonay not wanting/being in a position to play

I thought Sonay had joined the squad - on her Instagram she talked about what a good team they had and how she loved playing with the team - or was I reading too much into it???

 Christine

This was the original squad - before Emma - and now Jodie has joined the team.

You're right, Christine, Sonay is part of the team

I'd lost count....... Jodie is there just to replace Emma:

LTA site 5th April:

www.lta.org.uk/fan-zone/billie-jean-king-cup/news/british-tennis-star-sonay-kartal-on-her-impressive-form-and-a-gb-team-call-up/

Burrage will replace British No.2 Emma Raducanu who withdrew from the squad earlier in the week.

She adds to an already strong GB side that includes British No.1 Katie Boulter, Monastir champion Sonay Kartal, experienced Billie Jean King Cup star Harriet Dart and Britains top doubles player Olivia Nicholls.

I would take issue with Jodie not being a strong doubles player. She has always had quite decent results including a WTA 250 title and as a more power player might be a better option as a partner to Olivia than Heather or Harriet.

Nothing like keeping them guessing. The LTA ha posted some short clips of doubles practice, with Liv, Harriet, Latie and Jodie - in various different combinations.

Holland 1-0 up on Germany. Eva Vedder surprisingly defeating Niemeier pretty easily.

We'll need a new thread once the draw is announced tomorrow for the GB v Germany match.
