The singles players in doubles strategy seems to have had mixed results this week- the us team lost, the Italians won. The Dutch and Spanish played a hybrid pair against each other, Koolhof and VdZ versus Alcaraz and Granollers
Makes you wonder if Boulter/Radacanu might have been a better option for the Team GB decider?
Yes. It's a really interesting question. And we'll never know, of course.
But Heather is not 'a doubles player' - she's not playing and training for doubles full-time with the benefis that brings.
She's a singles player who's quite handy at doubles. Which is not the same.
And, unfortunately - but importantly - now only a middling singles player.
Generally, for a team like ours, a hybrid choice would be the most obvious - to give power on the serve and groundshots, for someone like Liv to then trust and leverage
Katie had had a long match and is not the most natural doubles player
Emma and Liv might have been a good choice (although maybe Emma didn't want to? Always possible)
But it's all 'ifs and ands', it's not a criticism of Anne, assuming Liv and Heather were playing a lot better than the other pairings in practice (it is a criticism if they weren't or she hadn't tried other pairings in practice but surely.....)
Personally I would never have played either Katie or Emma in the doubles as well as singles. They have both had too many illness and injury problems in the past and I think it puts too much stress on their bodies. Yes we would love to win the BJ King cup but not at the cost of our players health. Remember how long Katie was out for after she played with that back injury at the Copper Box in London? It isnt worth that much sacrifice. IMHO
We dont have a Davis Cup thread - as no British interest- but Australia beat USA today. Hewitt chose Kokkinakis who beat Shelton, Adam lost to Fritz, but then USA ditched ram and Krajicek for Shelton and Tommy Paul and they got taught a doubles lesson by Thompson and Ebden.
If any country wins outside Britain, I always have a big soft spot for the Aussies and like to see them do well.
I don't think such nice feelings towards Australia are shared by too many English folk in sport generally Some take much joy at their failures not just vs England or GB. Personally I rather like Aussies and Australia but certainly am well into them receiving an unexpected sporting defeat.
I still recall in the 2012 Olympics when quite well into the 2 weeks the highlights program had a board up recording how Yorkshire led Australia in the medals table.

Halcyon days, my friend, for sure. Im a big Yorkshire fan, obviously, but I sort of see the Aussies as not too dissimilar in a lot of ways - a place where a spade is a spade.

Absolutely !
I like nearly all the individual Aussie tennis players - they're a great crowd when they come to Surbiton
But that doesn't apply to Australia the country at all
I take great pleasure when we beat them at rugby, or cricket, or anything really
