I think Alex has most definitely done something for Katie's game. That support from somebody else at the top of the game who believes in you is a big thing mentally.
Absolutely. And I get the feeling it's not just support - Katie has talked about them practising together, and Alex's input - he's always struck me as a smart, canny guy and I think he's helped her with tactics, game strategy, strengths and weaknesses etc (as well probably as schedule planning) - even if I liked Bates (#sofunny), sometimes the older coaches are rather set in their ways, with an older mindset
Good to see Katie marching on and climbing up the rankings little by little (up 2 to 27=CH in live rankings).
Liv and Tereza take the first set in a tie-break - they made hard work of it and should have won both the tiebreak and the set much earlier.
and they then lost the second set.
and then the match
Very canny our Katie. In selecting tournaments and hanging in there she is an excellent example as to what can be achieved away from the big name tournaments and slams. Well done. Our up and coming youngsters could learn alot from her strategy. Sharp mind means after she is done with the tour, IMO she could be a world class coach and an excellent BJK captain.
Can I say that everything about Katie has improved a hundred-fold since Jezzer has gone?
And, connected maybe, since Alex has come on the scene ?
I dont think Katies schedule is particularly different to most to be honest! The sensible thing she has done is arranged longer downtime periods during the season so she can still play now rather than being burnt out, she has still done all her compulsory tournaments and limited 250s - draws are more luck than smart I think.
With her ranking being around top 30 since end of Feb, her schedule has been largely dictated for her. She has to play the Slams, all the 1000s and 6 500s. She's not permitted to play ITFs, can only play 125s in the 2nd week of 2 week events and for a few months when in the top 30 was only allowed to play a 250 if she couldn't get into a 500. The only decisions on scheduling she really had to do was choose which 500s were the 6 she was going to play. Whether by design or accident she had boxed herself in to play Ningbo and Tokyo in order to meet her 500 commitments. Would she have played them if she didn't have to? We'll never know.
Out of curiosity, did this week's WTA events count towards qualification the WTA Finals which start today, so surely not? So do they count towards 2025 finals?

This week's events count towards next year's race.
From the rulebook....
