Tough match for Heather. Fernandez took Zheng to three sets in the Tokyo SF this week.

Week 43 - WTA 250 - Hong Kong, China (outdoor hard)

Given the field that's very unlucky for Hev not to have a pretty winnable opener. She's also not playing doubles which given its not much higher quality that a 75k is very surprising - guessing she must be carrying a niggle still that's stopping her doing both.

Doubles - a weak draw this week, hopefully they can take advantage, although they need to reach the final for either of them to improve.

L16:- Tereza Mihalikova (SVK) / Olivia Nicholls (GBR) CR84 (43+41) [2] v Xinyu Gao (CHN) / Su Jeong Jang (KOR) (368+278)

Happy Birthday to Liv - 30 today

Heather has beaten Leylah three times before but the last time was the Acapulco final 4 years ago.

Leylah seems to be playing well now. And she is now 22 with a lot more experience. Acapulco seems so long ago !

Yes I agree, hence the "but" in my comment. Even then it took three sets and it was before Leylah was runner up to Emma in the US Open final.

Aoi Ito had a good week in Osaka - beating Kenin and reaching the semis. She's also young and at a career high.

She has an very unorthodox game - some shades of Niculescu with the slicey forehand and more attacking flat backhand, with a bit of Hsieh net play and mix up of paces. Katie has had issues with that kind of player in the past (remembering the Harmony Tan match at Wimbledon), so will need to come prepared.
