Week 43 - ITF W75 Glasgow, Great Britain - Indoor Hard

Agree with all the posts. We really are in such a good space on the womens side. Mens is alright I suppose .

Heartbreaker for Marni. 4-2 up in the 3rd, and lost 10-8 in the final set tiebreak.

Had a match point herself at 6-5 in the breaker but the Swiss girl played a very calm point and wrong-footed her. Marni herself then saved match points at 7-6 and 8-7 with a big serve and a screamer of a return down the line which left even her looking in mild disbelief.

But Waltert played another solid point to get a third match point and Marni dumped a backhand into the net

Watched bits of Marni play this year, at Wimbledon qualies and then the last couple of weeks. Others who've watched her more regularly will know far more than me...but she has a great ball-striking ability, she could definitely go a lot higher if she could only improve her defensive abilities a little bit.

I get that her game is first strike tennis on the serve and return, but whenever her opponent manages to land that first punch into the corners, she's always a bit leaden-footed and easily off balance. Waltert today was very beatable, just managed to make her play a few more balls. And whenever she had a ball to attack in the middle of the court, at times it seemed like Marni had already given up on the point.

With today's game, you have to be such a good mover to make the top 100, it's a big missing piece from Marni's tennis. Will be interesting to see whether she can add that.

Well that's a shame - thought we could have had an all-Brit final.

SF:- Amarni Banks (GBR) WR283 [8] lost to Simona Waltert (SUI) WR205 [5] 2-6 6-3 (8)6-7

SF:- Jodie Anna Burrage (GBR) WR332 lost to Mariam Bolkvadze (GEO) WR228 [6] 4-6 2-6

Hopefully Freaya and Jodie can take the doubles

Gutted about Marni. Anyone know what her coaching/training setup is?

Still coached by Suzi Riley as far as I know.

I agree with this

Often just slightly flat-footed, lacking a bit of dynamism in her micro movements

(Now Katie B is the same, but she's got a different physique, and a different style of tennis)

I do wonder about Marni's injuries though

I mean, someone who has a wrist injury should come back A1 100% fit in terms of cardio etc

More tricky with a leg injury

Marni's, I believe (might be wrong?), was stomach and back

So if she wasn't able to train much in any way while injured, she probably dropped a lot of fitness

And she's been injured on and off the whole time, tbh, so maybe she just never has had chance to really build it up

Gutting loss for Marni. She had that match.

So much to work on and I think she will.
