RE: Week 43 - ATP 500 - Swiss Indoors - Basel, Switzerland (indoor hard)

Jamie & John more than make up for the disappointment of Neal's & Michael's defeat earlier:

 Final:  (Q) Jamie Murray & John Peers (AUS) CR 81 (34+47) defeated (1) Wesley Koolhof & Nikola Mektic (NED/CRO) CR 28 (13+15) by 3 & 5  biggrin

And a little well done, en passant, to France's Big Man, Giovanni Mpteshi Perricard, only recently turned 21, who took the singles title

(as said many times before, with him and Arthur Fils, French male tennis is suddenly looking a LOT rosier - and it's good to see 'tennis of colour' too)

He served a 149.8 mph serve as well, which Shelton returned for a winner!

Those two French lads are genuine talents. With Jack, the challenge behind the current top 10 is hitting up, for sure.

AVERAGE first speed of 138 mph

Average second serve of 131 mph

22 aces

It's true it's a bit of a servefest - but very very impressive

And to think he was ATP 205 at the start of the season - and now ATP 31

Great for all of us who paid £15 and got to watch him play at Wimbledon qualifiers ! (I stood about 6 inches from him at one point - Lord, it was like being towered over by the Empire State Building )

And even cheaper I think it was for Queens qualifiers - blinkin' bargain

Jeff Sackmann has done an in depth analysis of GMP, particularly his backhand and asking the question if having such a poor backhand really matters.

www.tennisabstract.com/blog/2024/10/31/does-mpetshi-perricards-backhand-even-matter/

Jeff argues yes and it comes back to the debate in other threads around Jack and winning the important points in the margin. Just a small improvement on points won for Perricard and he could rise wll above his current rank

What is interesting in these stats is that, although it isnt about Jack, the stats show he runs around his backhand more than the average player, much more, and be interesting to see if he could improve its effectiveness, which is just at tour average level in the stats (as opposed to top 20 level).

Dan Evans also shows up here as only playing just over 11% of his backhands as something other than a slice. I have always loved Dans slice but maybe he does it too much - if Karlovic is the only player surpassing him, you can say that it isnt necessarily something to be proud of!
