Can anyone please explain why they have moved the number 6 seed into the number one seed's position. I thought if a seed withdrew after the draw they normally promoted the next highest ranked player to a number 9 seed and put them in the blank spot. Sometimes I think I've even seen a LL moved to this slot. But it seems a bit random moving another seed.
Who replaces a withdrawn seed depends on whether all, some or no seeds have a bye, whether the first day's order of play has been released and whether play has started. In a draw where only some seeds have a bye and before play has started, if a seed that has a bye withdraws then the highest seed not to have a bye takes their place. If play has started then it should be a lucky loser.
Indeed. Navarro was replaced by Kasatkina [5] and then Paolini by Haddad Maia [6]. I'm not sure if Katie has benefitted by the change - any of those seeds would make a tough opponent.
Oh gosh that's complicated. No wonder I was confused!! Thanks for the explanation.
Good to see Katie get a win - if she can beat Haddad Maia after beating Errani, it will feel like she is a player on a mission to beat those with a past history, if you get my drift!
Katie continues her mission at 7.00 on Thursday morning British time.
Katie hit almost 50 unforced errors, when she was hitting the court - she seemed in control. But unfortunately the confidence just isn't there right now. Will she play again this year?
Yeah, their last meeting in Toronto was effectively a bye for Katie with it ending at 1-1 (games, not sets). Katie was the slight favourite going into that match, but since then she'd only won 3 of her last 8 matches heading into today, whereas BHM was 15-5, and thus, she was the 1/2 betting favourite here.

Katie's confidence has been lacking ever since her losses on the clay really. She had enough natural talent on the grass to get her another title in Nottingham but she seemed to lose all faith in her forehand which had been such a weapon for the previouis 12 months. Perhaps a new coaching set up is needed now if she does want to develop further? Keep the fitness coach though!!

I wonder if this extraordinary point was symptomatic: https://x.com/WTA/status/1846844668975194451
