I was trying to find out what J Mercers first name was - but it seems he is actually called J?! Unless my search isnt deep enough, everywhere calls him J.

JJ's name is John Jeremiah. He goes by JJ as his dad is also called John who had a brief spell on the ATP tour as player and coach, but has mainly coached college tennis (Head women's coach at Marshall University for the last 20 years). His dad has just appointed JJ as his assistant coach at Marshall.

Ah ha - your search skills are better than mine. I kept getting stuck with J and JJ and couldnt seem to find any evidence of a name, although Marshall came up a lot. there seemed to be a college footballer with the same name as well, unless I misread it!

Because I'm hard pressed to think that his son, by chance, is the best qualified applicant (indeed, did he do proper applications?)
The big club near where I live had the senior coach hire his son as junior coach - pure nepotism - made it extremely difficult for the other junior coaches, became like a closed shop, son got the best classes, the top groups, the best other junior coaches left....
Let son make his own way, on his own merit, somewhere else
