2 hours 43 minute match, I am not sure either could have managed a third set, certainly Emma was feeling it towards the end, so well done to get over the line.
Was a pleasure to watch Sonay just consistently doing her thing. Emma, try it.
I was critical of Sonay still playing at W35 level but she got plenty of match practice as a result which paid off handsomely. Hopefully playing a full Asian swing will have a similar benefit for Emma.
The Met office says it is 29C in Seoul feels like 32C, humidity 77%.

that feels pretty heavy going to me!!
wuss
Seriously, I didn't see any of the match and it certainly sounds as though it wasn't a very pretty match (as the French would say), which might have been due to conditions or whatever
But, bottom line, Emma won in two sets, over a pretty decent top-100 player
I watched most of the match and it was quite tense because it kept swinging one way then the other. You couldn't predict the likely winner right up to the end. Nearly all the games in the first set went against service but most of the games in the 2nd set went with service. At one point Stearns was serving for the 2nd set. Emma picked her game up to go 40-0 up and went on to level the score and then took it to a tie break. I don't think Emma would have won a third set, she was looking just about all in at the end of the 2nd and did well to turn it round.
Thanks, Peter - that sounds more draining for the fans !
Winning in two sets is an important skill - and some players really need to focus on it (especially ones like Emma at the moment, or Fran) - either win in two or retire at the end of the second - that's what one coach used to instill in his players and he had a point
That win moves Emma up to 60 in the live rankings from 13 tournaments, including 3 when she collected only 10 points. As they rankings on a player's best 18 in a 12 month period there is plenty of chances to add points between now and Wimbledon.
