Sonay was just great. She hit the ball with confidence and a good level of skill. So pleased for her.
Personally I hate these on court interviews and when you've just lost your first WTA level final and frankly, played pretty badly at times, then the last thing I would want to do is hold a microphone and say some some nice things in a language which isn't my first.
And Sonay already out of Top 100 on live rankings.
Can't we enjoy Sonay's success for more than a couple of days? She's a Top 100 player for at least a week, live rankings are constantly in flux (and aren't used for tournament entries or seedings) so are neither here nor there.
Yes, sorry, just realised I highlighted something I was attempting to criticise. Am not a fan of live rankings, as it suggests that no one's ranking is concrete. But of course it is. Sonay is the world No. 96 and has a WTA title.

I think both are valid comments - it's true that Sonay has points coming off, and a lot of people look at the live rankings for next week, it's never a huge 'surprise' when the new rankings come out, so it's reasonable to post it - and it underlines the ephemeral nature of rankings too
But it also grates sometimes when you post actual rankings and people instantly say 'but in live rankings it's X' - I'm like, these are actual official rankings, let's deal with the new ones when we get there
Which slightly contradicts the first comment, I know
Without getting too existential about it, I think it just shows how fast paced life is in a digital age. I remember as a kid waiting to get a newspaper to see the results from a tennis event being played overseas.

I remember getting monthly magazines like Ace or Tennis World to read up on all the tournaments!

There was an even better magazine called Tennis Today which had extraordinary coverage of both the domestic and international scene.
I think many of us really like live rankings. Yes, some just like to wait and consider the actual official ones.
But I do like to know where we are likely / could be heading. Take them in context though - they are what players' points and rankings will look like next Monday ( assuming they win no further matches - i.e. on round reached if they are playing at all, and assuming the other players win no further matches either ). If they are not playing or out they won't go any higher than their live rankings, if they are still in it can be interesting to see where they might get to ( and some live sites give points for next round, title win etc ). Yay to live rankings.
But each to their own of course
As for Sonay, as soon as she (.entirely understandably ) withdrew from this week, looking at points to come off it was clear that she would for now drop out of the top of the top 100 ( though she now will have no further points to drop this year and relatively little before May next year ).
Keep fit and well, she certainly should be top 100 again ( in the short term hopefully get the points she needs for Australian Open MD entry ). But the great thing for now is that she is top 100 which clearly is one of the big things on very many players' target lists and no-one can ever take away that she got there. Now let's see how much further she can travel ...
Mention is made of us having no WTA singles titles between July 1988 and October 2012. and since then we have had 13 titles won . One could also add that in that period 1988 to 2012 we had 3 singles finalists. Sarah Loosemore in 1990, , Jo Durie in July 1990 and then a wait of over 22 years before Laura at Gangzhou in September 2012. Apart from the 13 titles won since October 2012 we have also had 7 runners up. Hoping I'm not missing anybody but I make that Jo 5, Heather and Jodie 1 a piece. So 20 finalists in 12 years against 3 finalists in the 24 years after Sara Gomer's title in July 1988.

So there appears to be a new category of ranking between weekly ranking and live ranking: a temporary weekly ranking. The ATP have published a temporary weekly ranking before the completion of last week's Tour events. As if rankings couldn't get more confusing...

And, pray, what actually is a temporary weekly ranking if it isnt a live one or the usual weekly one?! What data does it entail (-and is the WTA also doing it?)

presumably this is linked to having some of these bigger events in Asia finishing mid week and hence not all points being ready to go on as of the Monday?
We also, of course, have the various Races being pushed hard by the governing bodies at this time (ATP singles and doubles, WTA singles and doubles, Next Gen) so lots of different rankings to enjoy and look forward to!
And now the ATP have updated their weekly rankings. I wonder what will happen next week as Tokyo and Beijing both end midweek. And do the Monday rankings even count. Or do I need to get a life?
