Starting at Wimbledon Qualifying Sonay has won 24 matches and lost just 2 to Gauff at Wimbledon and Starodubtseva in qualifying at New York which she avenged here.
Simply amazing from Sonay!!! What a mind blowing week, I loved her calmness under pressure even when it got tricky near the end. British depth is looking good :)
She is defending points from last year. She would bounce out of top 100 if she is not able to defend those points.
She got there and has very good prospects of getting back there with what relatively little in total she has to defend over the next 8 months.
She can bounce back out for now if she wants a wee rest.
Be good though to get Australian Open MD entry sorted over the next couple of months ( her 68 points due off on Monday week are all she has due off before that entry list comes out ).
I watched quite a bit, it was a good match. Never in doubt really that Sonay would win though even when she struggled to close it out. Her speech (which they made her wait ages to make) was really good to. Very mature and together person she seemed to me.
Thought Sramkova looked very po faced at end of the match with briefest of hand shakes .
Yes, and I also noticed how she started her runner-up speech by saying well done to "my opponent" rather than naming Sonay and that didn't sit right with me. Sonay on the other hand referred to her as "Rebecca" and pointed out that she had beaten Sonay last year which I thought was a lot nicer and more gracious.
Well done Sonay!! Who would have seen this coming just 3 months ago?
I make it that on Monday it will be only the 2nd week this century that we will have had 4 women in the singles top 100. And, given that on the previous occasion GB #4 was precisely WR 100, it will be the best ranked GB #4 we will have had.
I don't know how far back it would be since we had more than 4 in the top 100 or a better ranked GB #4.
Anyway, that previous occasion was 16/07/2012:
WR 71 Heather Watson WR 76 Anne Keothavong WR 91 Laura Robson WR 100 Elena Baltacha
Think that's one for Stephen. Am guessing it might be sometime in the 80s. We had up to 6 Top 100 players at one stage.

I noticed this too, but it was her first final and she was clearly very disappointed/upset. I'll let it slide.
