Evolution needs to get this done in two. Lots of variety required to expose the Fin.

Evolution often does get things done but sometimes takes millions of years.

And the match evolves from a tight first set and now into the first break of the match. Dan surely should bring it home now

phew, it could always have been a hiding to nothing but glad Dan got it over the line. Now, massive match for Billy, going to say I think the Finn is favourite, just because I think there will be less pressure on him (self pressure) but Billy could be a hero if he gets this one!

Comment by Colin Fleming in the BBC live text commentary:

Job done for Dan Evans. He could have got a bit of a fright in that first set because Eero Vasa was playing some really impressive tennis. Big serving, big forehands, a game full of power, wasn't it? But Evans just able to just show a bit of calmness and class to come through the tie-break and once he did he was able to run away with the second and he'll be happy about that because he'll most likely be on court later for a doubles as well. Ultimately Dan Evans just a little too good.

I'd ruddy hope he would be too good !

Though looks as if he was quite a way off his best after his US Open exertions.

Half watched Evo's match on Tennis Channel while half working, clearing the decks to sit and watch Billy make his debut. And Tennis channel have switched to the Czech vs Spain.

Match 2:  Otto Virtanen (FIN) WR 110 (CH = 109 in April) vs Billy Harris WR 101 (= CH)

First set in the bag for Billy by 6-4.  If he can but hold on, there'll be no need for Dan to take to the court again in the doubles...

Great start for Billy, his first serve the difference in the first set.

Virtanen another poor start to the second. The Finn needs to break now.

Who would have expected to see Billy playing for GB a few years ago.  What an achievement!

Can he do it? YES, HE CAN - despite a little hiccup when he lost the break he'd earned half-way through the second set!  biggrin

Match 2:  Billy Harris WR 101 defeated Otto Virtanen (FIN) WR 110 by 6-4 7-6(4)

GB wins the tie by 2-0 (*).  Well done, Billy, the DC debutant.

(*) with the doubles still to come
