Sir Andy Murray September 2024 Player of the Month Award - Nominations thread

Overall, that''s quite a list, which is well worth people reading back through and recalling some highlights - including the US Open, Paralympics and big titles and CHs.

I know. Where does one even start selecting a winner?!

I hope with summer done, we get a decent votes haul! The past couple of months have been quite slow, and September has in the past been a poor voting month, but Im hoping we manage to get a boost this back to somewhere in the 40s.

You need to clone yourself.  Not sure if anyone else on here has ever done that wink

If a Bob in the UK appeared, would that be grounds for an HMRC investigation?! Just asking for a friend...

We have had 4 ties so far in the votes this season, it feels like this month could be another to challenge the voting system.

With the finals involving Oli Tarvet not likely to finish until quite late Sunday evening, and given it is possible it will impact his nomination and his record if he is nominated, just to record that I wont be posting the votes until after his results come in.

As these could be late Sunday night, I have decided I will post the poll for the voting on Monday morning and run the vote from Monday morning through to Wednesday morning.

the nominations will close an hour after Oli Tarvey finishes his doubles final

If you wanted, Jon, one of us could nominate Oli T now, so you could get it going earlier - and those who weren't going to vote for him, whether he won or lost, could go ahead and vote, and those who have him in the mix could wait till Monday or Tuesday.

It might prejudice the voters against Oli - i.e. you vote now, to 'get it done', and choose someone else

But it also might help you get more votes because some people may only log on at the weekend when they've got more time, and finals are being played and you won't catch the Sunday voters otherwise

Just a thought ???

Oh, thats very strategic - I think the only other player left in worthy of a wait is Jake, as winning his final might influence votes. So Id prefer to wait for that at least. But your plan allows the vote to go up late PM / early evening. And Olis singles result may be in by circa 8 pm anyway, based on Lambdas post.

So, I like the idea and could at least post the vote in the late pm.

If there is someone out there (Lambda?) who would mind nominating Oli T with some good supporting narrative, that would get the ball rolling at least!?

Thanks CD!

1. Dan Evans. Do I need to explain? For winning the longest ever US Open match over Khachanov, at 5 hours 35 minutes, and backing it up with another win over 36th ranked Navone in reaching the third round, where fatigue caught up with him. Inspiring and gutsy.

2. Max Basing currently ranked 1000+, reaching final of an M15 beating 5th seed 522 and 7th seed, highest ranking also in 500s along the way. Building on it with a run to the title M25 Bali where he beat the 4th seed ranked in the 400s in the semis, and the 8th seed ranked in the 500s along the way

3. Jack Draper. only the 4th British player to reach the US Open semi in the open era. Getting to his first slam semi final at the US Open without dropping a set including a win over the conqueror of Alcaraz and top 10 ranked De Minaur .Overcome in the semis by a combination of sickness and number 1 seed Sinner but fought to the end in a 3 hour struggle. Hes showing himself to be a potential slam winner and moves into the top 20.

4. Alfie Hewett/ Gordon Reid - winning the paralympics mens doubles gold medal - their first gold and on top of winning all 3 slams this year as well. In four matches, lost no sets and just 17 games

5. Mika Stojsavljevic - winning the us open girls singles at the age of 15! On the way beating Jovic who won a round in the women's singles. Our first winner of this since 2009 when Heather won it and only the second GB girl to reach the final since the tournament started.

6. Jan Choinski - winning his third challenger title of his career and first in over 12 months, unseeded, and getting a 100 place ranking boost to around 176 in the process

7. James Story - from qualies, came through to win his first ever ITF title at the M15 in Monastir, ranked below 2000, he beat several players in the top 1000 in the process and followed a doubles title the previous week at the same location

8. Billy Harris - for making his Davis Cup debut at the age of 29 and winning his first ever match for Team GB against Finland to give us victory in the opening Round Robin match

9. Anna McBride - for winning the womens singles title at the World Para Tennis Championships in Annecy, overcoming a tough French opponent in a 2 hours 20 minute final. Also winning the mixed doubles title and taking bronze in team and womens doubles.

10. Jake Fearnley, for winning yet another Challenger title, this time a 100-level in Rennes. Beat home favourite Quentin Halys in the final (after losing the first set 6-0 and fighting off a match point in the second set). En route to the final, he beat top seed Mannarino, his first victory over a top 50 player. Will see him rise 30+ places in the ranking to a new CH of around 130.

11. Sonay Kartal, for winning her first WTA title, as a qualifier, the Monastir 250, beating a string of top 150 players in the MD (highest WR 74), and aa a result herself charging into the top 100, at WR 96 - rising over 200 places in the last 3 months

12. Ewen Lumsden - following James Story last week, Ewen similarly comes through to win his first ITF singles title, an M15 in Monastir ( he also won the doubles ) winning unseeded. Great week for him and should now enter the top 1000

13. Ophelie Korpanec Davies - born 2009 - for doing the double and winning both singles and doubles titles, at the J60 in Mauritius

14. Jodie Burrage for winning the doubles title at the W100 in Portugal on only her second week back on Tour after a long injury break.

15. Oli Bonding - got his first ranking point in an ITF M25 in Japan, followed up with reaching the final in the big J500 Osaka event, his second J500 final of the season.

16. Clarice Ouvarova (age 13) - for doing the double in the Dominican Republic - winning both the singles and doubles - beating the Ukranian girl Rick Macci has tipped for future number one in the world - and for being a very interesting prospect

updated Oli B slightly

So, with CDs input, Ill put a vote up this evening, once we know the results of Jakes challenger final and Oli Ts singles final in the USA, which should allow some people to vote this evening, and close the vote Tuesday night also.

So keep an eye out, probably after 8 and before 10 for the poll. And , of course, anyone wishing to nominate Oli t or anyone else, please feel free before then- we will use the end of the Oli T singles final as the timing cut off for nominations.

Updated Jake's entry after his splendid achievement today.

OK maybe I was a little premature.

So there's Jack, Mika, Sonay and Jake, all of whom would have been obvious winners in an average month.

Thanks Tanaqui - this vote has become impossible, really. I cant choose between almost half the field.

Vote will go up after Oli Tarvet finishes, as mentioned, in his singles. If he wins the title tonight, Ill add him to the list (unless Lambda wants to get a more expressive write up on the list before me- or anyone else for that matter!).

Aim is the vote will be posted by around 9, so please get any other final nominations posted before then. It will be one big , single, impossible, vote this month.
