Sir Andy Murray September 2024 Player of the Month Award - Nominations thread

4 days left for nominations now. Feels like this one will end up with a single vote, cant see us getting another 7 nominations this week!

So, if that holds true, vote will run from Sunday evening to Tuesday evening.

1. Dan Evans. Do I need to explain? For winning the longest ever US Open match over Khachanov, at 5 hours 35 minutes, and backing it up with another win over 36th ranked Navone in reaching the third round, where fatigue caught up with him. Inspiring and gutsy.

2. Max Basing currently ranked 1000+, reaching final of an M15 beating 5th seed 522 and 7th seed, highest ranking also in 500s along the way. Building on it with a run to the title M25 Bali where he beat the 4th seed ranked in the 400s in the semis, and the 8th seed ranked in the 500s along the way

3. Jack Draper. only the 4th British player to reach the US Open semi in the open era. Getting to his first slam semi final at the US Open without dropping a set including a win over the conqueror of Alcaraz and top 10 ranked De Minaur .Overcome in the semis by a combination of sickness and number 1 seed Sinner but fought to the end in a 3 hour struggle. Jack ha now followed this up by beating world no 8 Hurkacz to reach the Tokyo quarter final. Hes showing himself to be a potential slam winner and moves into the top 20.

4. Alfie Hewett/ Gordon Reid - winning the paralympics mens doubles gold medal - their first gold and on top of winning all 3 slams this year as well. In four matches, lost no sets and just 17 games

5. Mika Stojsavljevic - winning the us open girls singles at the age of 15! On the way beating Jovic who won a round in the women's singles. Our first winner of this since 2009 when Heather won it and only the second GB girl to reach the final since the tournament started.

6. Jan Choinski - winning his third challenger title of his career and first in over 12 months, unseeded, and getting a 100 place ranking boost to around 176 in the process

7. James Story - from qualies, came through to win his first ever ITF title at the M15 in Monastir, ranked below 2000, he beat several players in the top 1000 in the process and followed a doubles title the previous week at the same location

8. Billy Harris - for making his Davis Cup debut at the age of 29 and winning his first ever match for Team GB against Finland to give us victory in the opening Round Robin match

9. Anna McBride - for winning the womens singles title at the World Para Tennis Championships in Annecy, overcoming a tough French opponent in a 2 hours 20 minute final. Also winning the mixed doubles title and taking bronze in team and womens doubles.

10. Jake Fearnley, for winning yet another Challenger title, this time a 100-level in Rennes. Beat home favourite Quentin Halys in the final (after losing the first set 6-0 and fighting off a match point in the second set). En route to the final, he beat top seed Mannarino, his first victory over a top 50 player. Will see him rise 30+ places in the ranking to a new CH of around 130.

11. Sonay Kartal, for winning her first WTA title, as a qualifier, and due to enter the top 100 women players in the world. Rising over 200 places in the last 3 months

12. Ewen Lumsden - following James Story last week, Ewen similarly comes through to win his first ITF singles title, an M15 in Monastir ( he also won the doubles )  winning unseeded. Great week for him and should now enter the top 1000

not looking like any new additions to our list this 4th week of 5; just a week left for September nominations, current plan is to close them Sunday September 29th. Remember, just add any new ones to the list in this post by quoting this post, adding a new name and reason and cutting out the extraneous comments (like this!) and re posting it.

Updating Jacks write up to include Tokyo !

So Japan has been exercising me! And I wondered if this could happen.

We have three events taking part now that close after the weekend.

The China womens open closes next weekend and so is clearly an October event; the China Open mens closes Wednesday and Japan Open mens on Tuesday.

So they go beyond the end of this weekend and end of September and Ive mentioned above that they should count towards October as opposed to September.

And so Im happy if folks want to nominate players for performances in those events in October as they wont finish playing much of the event until after the September vote takes place.

Jack becomes a case in point. He may go on to win Tokyo or do great things and that will be recognised in October.

But clearly hes has a great win in September and Danny has recognised that.

And we probably shouldnt recognise that. So , Im afraid, Im in a bit of a quandary! The pedant in me says to exclude the comments on Jack, for Tokyo, please. But the realist in me says we cant stop people considering it, its human nature.

I blame it on the ATP having a Tuesday finish.

Im also happy to await comment from others as I really am in a position where Im not quite sure what to do - allow jacks Tokyo form to count in September; say it should be October; or delay the vote until all our players are out of Japan (and what do I do with China?)

As per previous posts, my lnclonation is to stick with China and Japan counting towards October.

And stick with the vote this Sunday, for September. I dont want September running to 6 weeks or so, October will become 3 weeks and there are other events next week that will get caught up as well.

I cant stop anyone taking into account whatever they want in their voting though, thats a personal choice. And I dont want to censor how someone votes, that is also their personal choice.

I agree JonH - stick with this weekend. Part of me thinks that it should be done on when the tournaments finish, and part of me thinks matches in September should be considered. But you have to draw the line somewhere and I think you are right.

Do whatever is easiest for you, and seems most logical for you, Jon

To me, just to be awkward, something that's played 99% in Sept. belongs more in Sept. But it really doesn't matter, there's swings and roundabouts, so you make the executive call, and we'll all go along with you

I think your inclination for a Sunday close is just right in an awkward situation, and more importantly, even if arguable, it's clear to anyone that cares to read ( maybe do one more fairly short clear post and then that's it? ). Extend it and as you say, we then have other events starting so you'd then have to say - don't count them.

You're saying what's happening with the September PoM closing date and the China and Japan Opens and no harm at all IMO in indicating when / to which thread folk should logically put any comments / nominations they feel emerge from the China or Japan Opens. It's not to overdirect or censor, it's to explain and be helpful.

Im sorry Jon, I didnt mean to complicate things ! I suppose I thought that after Jacks heroics at the Open it would be a shame if his disappointments in the Davis Cup ( when he was clearly still not fully recovered ) belittled his September achievements and Tokyo showed that he is still on track to have had a great month !

Thanks all and no worries Danny! Its complex and the reasons you used made total sense. Ill put a clarifying note out and will re post the list with an edit for Jack, see if it works ok!

So, just to confirm - due to the midweek finishes to the mens Japan and China Opens, and a whole week for womens China Open, the events all finish beyond the September PoM vote.

The vote will go up Sunday night; rather than have part weeks counting towards Sept and Oct respectively, the China and Japan Opens will all count for October in terms of PoM nominations and performances to be taken into account.

Please dont take them into account (although I cant really stop you) in September.

A separate October PoM thread will go up next week and any nominations can be put in there.

Thanks!

Just two days left for nominations. As it stands , players left in the US College ITA events could be the last standing. Ill decide on poll timing when I see if theres anyone left in the final day and any nominations through that route. Oli Tarvet may be one, Lambda is probably closest to the event to comment on possible nominations from there.

Although the womens Portuguese event seems well behind schedule , anyone know the plan there?
