Fab result but what a rubbish draw. No.23 seed in the 1st round and WR36 in the 2nd.

Navone is mainly a clay courter though and TEnnis Abstract , if it is worth anything, has Dan as 80 percent plus favourite over the Argentinian player. Lets see.

So looking at things positively. It was Navone's first hard court win of the summer over someone who hadn't won a match since Wimbledon.

Looking at things more negatively. Evans played for 5 hours and 35 minutes and is 34 years old.

But overall after a terrible and injury hit year, he's had two career highlights this year that no one can take away from him.

With Cam Norrie unlikely to be fit for Davis Cup, maybe Dan can perform more heroics playing as No. 2 there.

definitely - looking for sure that we will need him in that second spot. And presumably Billy, Jake and Paul are the contenders for the fifth spot? When do they need to finalise the squad by, end of US Open? And are any of those players playing next week to get their name in the frame for selection?

Deadline for final noms is Monday 9 Sep.

Paul and Billy are in Shanghai CH next week, Liam in Cassis CH; Jake was supposed to be in Cassis but has withdrawn

Billy was supposed to be in Chengdu ATP 250 w.c. 16th but has withdrawn, perhaps he has a nod for the DC squad?

Jack and Dan are third and fourth match on court 5, following Katie on the same court.

I'm getting the impression with Dan that he's becoming the tennis equivalent of Ian Poulter. Can lift his game on the biggest occasion, but after those highs, struggles to replicate those performances on the smaller stages.

He needs a win here to be inside the top 200, but even that isn't going to give him access to the biggest stages.

I hope he gets to end his career on a big high, but I fear his rankings may cause him to fizzle out. Final season wildcard at Wimbledon is probably how it will all end.

He could easily have a couple more good years.... remember he worked back up through all the lower level tournaments before. You wouldn't bet against him getting through qualifying for aus open if needed or other bigger tournaments if he is on form and playing like he was on Tuesday.

Not much wrong with the first set from Jack. Broke Diaz early and kept the pressure on.

I also think Dan loves tennis and will give doubles a go for a few seasons when he reckons singles is done for him. He could easily play great doubles until hes 40 and that could be a good few years. And hed make top 20 or even top 10 if he went for it .

Even less wrong in the second set from Jack, 6-2. I can't see the wheels falling off now.

And it's cooler today, can't see Acosta getting a set at all. Very dominant Draper.

Probably Carlitos in the last 32...

The cooler conditions will help Evo. On balance, I think he will win. With his slice, Navone wont like it and if Evo can get to the net, he can win this in straight sets.

But hell probably lose in 5 now!

We knew it would most likely come, assuming Carlos gets there. its not a gimme though. Alcaraz won their first match in Baske in octber 22 7-5 final set. Jack then retired in the second set in IW, before Jack beat Carlos at Queens this year.

yes, Alcaraz will be favourite but Jack has a chance for sure.

Dan coming back into this game by shortening the points. Navone seems comfortable on the BH slices, trading them consistently, happy to sit at the baseline and lengthen the exchanges.
