Let's hope Emma can take a leaf out of Dan's book. Quote on the Beeb's live text commentary on the match:
I didn't want to go out without a fight
Britain's Dan Evans, speaking to Sky Sports after beating Russian 23rd seed Karen Khachanov in the longest US Open match in history:
"I haven't played a bunch of tennis this year, I just tried to keep fighting - at 4-0 I thought I was out, I felt a little sorry for myself, got myself going and didn't want to go out another Slam without a fight and a whimper. I could see he was struggling a bit and tried to grab a game at a time.
"I've got a bad headache now."
On his year so far: "I've had a horrible year. I knew I had put the work in but not enough because I was a bit hurt. Like to think I got a bit of luck at the end, nearly blew it at the end but I'm really happy. It was a hell of the match. I just want to go to bed."
On the crowds: "It was amazing at 4-2, it really started to get going. They sort of sensed it, I don't know how many Brits were there, but It seemed like the whole place wanted me to win. I don't think that has ever happened before. It really helped. I played pretty good, great last point and here we are."
Fab result but what a rubbish draw. No.23 seed in the 1st round and WR36 in the 2nd.
Navone is mainly a clay courter though and TEnnis Abstract , if it is worth anything, has Dan as 80 percent plus favourite over the Argentinian player. Lets see.

So looking at things positively. It was Navone's first hard court win of the summer over someone who hadn't won a match since Wimbledon.
Looking at things more negatively. Evans played for 5 hours and 35 minutes and is 34 years old.
But overall after a terrible and injury hit year, he's had two career highlights this year that no one can take away from him.
With Cam Norrie unlikely to be fit for Davis Cup, maybe Dan can perform more heroics playing as No. 2 there.

definitely - looking for sure that we will need him in that second spot. And presumably Billy, Jake and Paul are the contenders for the fifth spot? When do they need to finalise the squad by, end of US Open? And are any of those players playing next week to get their name in the frame for selection?

From what I can tell that was his first win not on clay since an M15 in Sharm el Sheikh in 2020. His only professional wins not on clay, he won two rounds in Sharm. So 3 wins not on Clay.

If Dan is fit he will certainly expect to win this one.
It is also a just reward for Evanss dedication at the Olympics. By playing in Paris he gave up the opportunity to defend the 500 ranking points he earned for winning last years Washington Open, which this year was being held during the same week as the Games. Murray has spoken of his gratitude to Evans for this decision, allowing him to play doubles in his last event before retirement.
