Weeks 35 & 36 - US Open - Flushing Meadows, New York City (hard) - main draw

Jack's not that far behind Sinner, he gave him a good, competitive game for two sets.

Jeff Tarango (remember him?) quoted on the Beeb's live text commentary on the match:

"More impressed with Draper now"

I was very impressed, I think he over-exceeded what he thought he was going to do here.  He's having his best Grand Slams at the US Open so many [maybe?] this is just a place that he performs really well. I look forward to watching him play a lot more.  Andy Murray played some of his best tennis at the US Open for years and years before he won it.

I'm more impressed with him [presumably Jack!] now than I was before this match. He didn't play a great match. His body wasn't quite there the whole time. but I'm more impressed with him now.

Tarango is on radio 5 for Wimbledon and other slams and is , easily, one of the best co commentators. Very inciteful and interesting and humourous.

He's a Yank.  What do you expect?  He's like those people who insist on qualifying "unique" with adverbs such as "quite" or "really".  wink

4 - 6 , 7 - 5 , 4 - 6 , 6 - 4 , 6-1. Taylor Fritz wins a proper 5 set ding dong in the other semi against Francis Tiafoe. It's not what Fritz needs before encountering a daisy-fresh Jannik Sinner but at least he will have the home crowd on his side.

Hes done that before (throwing up at the AO - put it down to emotional stress and I can see that!)

Great effort - top 20; now get rested and get back to Manchester and help us in the DC!

In a different context used to see this when lecturing at Uni and exam pressure..Sometimes had to go into exam hall with a sick bucket! Never used to impede their results overall though,

Yes, that's true. The same could be said about Henman various times when he lost in semi finals though, eg 'he wasn't far behind Sampras' for example. Time will tell with Jack. It won't be easy to repeat semis or even go better with Sinner, Alcaraz and others around. But the recent example of Andy and what he had to do to win slams with federer, Nadal and djokovic all playing should help him. Interesting the list of recent british gs semi finalists that was trotted out as jack got to the quarters to then semi. Llloyd (J), Henman, Rusedski, Murray, Edmund and Norrie. All different pathways after first semi, have to hope he exceeds Norrie, then Rusedski and Henman but it won't be easy, obviously.

Jack should get a sports psychologist to help with the anxiety it appears he has in close matches

Interesting what this implies about Ms Raducanu:

"I dont think theres a danger of what happened to Emma happening to Jack. I know his personality and hes very grounded and has got good people around him."

Jannik Sinner wins the US Open in straight sets 3-4-5.

I think that Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are a half step ahead of the other young seeds in terms of natural talent but still, Jack Draper improved massively in the last year and he's young enough to improve hugely again.

It's like Andy Murray never quite had the raw talent of the big three throughout his career but he still won a few Grand Slams.

He just had to work harder.
