Weeks 35-36 - Grand Slam US Open-Main Draw - Hard

Whoever won that tiebreak was winning the match. Too hard physically and mentally to rebound in these conditions.

Marta cruises through the second other than needing four match points in the final game.

Focus on the positives Harriet. Likely new career high, money in the bank. Onwards.

The fact is that peak Marta is better than peak Harriet. But still a shame not to have taken one of those set points which would have made the rest of the match very interesting.

This was about as far away from peak anyone I can imagine.

Dart really needs to work on that serve .

Very little positives to take from the US Open . You only get so many chances in a season to grab your moment when a higher ranked player is playing poorly . You need to step up and take them .

Dart failed to and will have a lot of regrets about that first set .

Not quite that battle     Pretty ropey Kostyuk too good for pretty ropey Harriet.

Brutal conditions.

It's like the tie break broke Harriet mentally but there's no need for her to feel like that as it's obvious from watching this match that there's no great gulf between the two of them.

She will, but Kostyuk might still have won. Harriet had a decent first round victory and is on a career hugh ranking.

Honestly I never expected her to be ranked as high as this.

Harriet, like girls like Katie O'Brien and maybe Naomi Broady before her (although I think some might argue Naomi could have gone a little further), are brilliant examples of squeezing out every drop of potential you have to maximise your career.

For all the shortcomings in her game, and not having some the natural talent blessings of others, that she consistently achieves at high levels is remarkable.

Katie is in a Brits court, court 5, tomorrow. She is second match on, then Jack and then Evo. kalinskaya is an honorary Brit and kicks the court off.

Really happy for Harriet. Winning a match that she should win and doing so in style. Up into Top 70, which I have to be honest I didn't see happening.

A fantastic win for Iva Jovic over Magda Linette. We've chatted a lot about Iva on these boards as a junior rival to Hannah (albeit two years older), and I was really impressed with her at Wimbledon. A reminder in the women's game that if you're good enough you're old enough.

Iva Jovic (16) took Ekaterina Akexandrova WR 31 to 7-5 in the 3rd, narrowly bowing out in R2.

Nice to see Iva getting an opportunity in the main draw rather than having to fight her way through qualifying .Hope our girls get a similar opportunity to prove their mettle at Wimbledon.

She actually earned the wild card by winning the US 18&Under nationals. The boys and girls winners always get a main draw wild card. Would be a brave thing for the LTA/All England Club to do for Wimbledon. Am not sure our national champions would always be competitive enough, but certainly a good experience.

Being a far smaller country, but with the same standard Grand Skam, I don't think GB can guarantee MD places to our U18 winners

However, USTA have also given Iva and other top youngsters main draw wcs into doubles, and mixed doubles

And, that, I think the AELTC should do, and they don't

I especially hate to see unused wildcards for doubles

I suppose that might be the next best option CD. Just thinking our young players might be disadvantaged compared to other global juniors. Having said that, they need to be ready to take the opportunity.

That said, our youngsters get more opps, I imagine than most countries outside maybe the other slam nations and Italy or Spain. Hard to imagine their senior playing opportunities are less than most other countries outside the big few!
