I don't want to join the pile in on Emma but sounds like she just lost momentum. I thought/hoped that she might just be protecting her body, which her Canadian Open decision was, but beyond that obviously not. Anyway she's still Top 70, can get into events, and hopefully can plan a better schedule better for the rest of the season.

Whatever the reason for missing the Canadian event, she lost momentum this hardcourts season. She missed the French when not given a wildcard, and wouldnt play qualies, and did the same at Canada and Cinci. Shes not too good or too big to be able to avoid putting in those yards, its a bad look and she is missing out on valuable learning and playing time by doing so.

Whoever is advising her, its not proving good advice.

And, from comments above, and what little I have seen of her, she does appear to have changed that attacking, zippy game that she had, that is how she will get good results in the future, not through grinding it out with more consistent baseliners.

Saying this as someone who didnt see her hit a ball, though!

Badly advised no? She had made a promising start in Washington.In Cincinnati there were some big names in qualifying. - Osaka lost then wow she puts out Ostapenko in the first round. I think maybe she needs a strategic shift . Disappointing as she navigated the grass season very well.

Also didn't not enter the other warm ups either like Monterey or Cleveland. Just....nothing.

And turning up cold didn't work for even Serena on occasion!

It does seem like a face plant moment. We all knew Emma needed more matches.

She easily could have played last week and been in a MD.

I am beginning to think Emma wont be around for years t9 come. I think shell have enough and move on.

I only saw the first set and I thought Emma wasnt playing defensively.

And she has had some decent results this summer but her attitude does seem a bit arrogant with missing two pre US Open Masters events .

It should be clear by now that her game has to be attacking and her terrible last 16 performance at Wimbledon showed that .

Shes at least back well inside the top 100 and well see what happens during the rest of the year .

She explained in her pre-tournament press conference why she hasn't played since Washington.

"I really wanted to play in Toronto, especially because I was born there, but the turnaround was too tight for qualifying. I would have had to play on Sunday and I finished [in Washington] late Friday night, so flying there and adjusting I just felt was too tight"

"[On not playing Cinci] It was just that I would have pretty much had to wait around just for one tournament in qualies and then another week off before the US Open - so I think it was a better decision we all made to just go back and work on things there."

Yes, I have generally been very relaxed about Emma ever since her US Open triumph, giving her a year or two to adjust to that tumultuous event, then taking taking account of her injuries. And been fairly confident that she would come back to concentrate more on her career in time, probably fitter, stronger and better. And if she chose otherwise so be it.

My only minor concern had been her many coaching set-up changes and the spiel surrounding some of them from her / her camp that a long term partnership was not really important and it was much about what you could take from each in turn. Hmm, confusion?

But her lack of warm up matches after a decent week in Washington has been very peculiar, not exactly helped by her now saying it might have been a good idea to play more. Yes, Emma! I had thought she was maybe protecting sone niggle or other but it does seem to have been simply choice with the supposed combination of reasons strange. Still not sure I would use the word 'arrogant' about her not playing qualifying. I think just 'stupid' for playing so little might be better. It is all rather head scratching.

Let's be getting back on track in Asia! And play on the front foot, please.

In terms of Harriet's mum travelling with her and her usual coach, Olga Morozova not being willing to travel. Firstly, hadnt realised Morozova was her coach, that is quite a catch (ex Wimbledon finalist) - does Morozova coach anyone else or is it just Harriet?

Secondly, is Morozova's relucatance to travel based on visa restrictions as a Russian or is it more health related (she is 75 years old, I think?)
