Her level has really dropped. Maybe the humidity?

Isn't this the way she usually plays away from 'home' ?

How do you mean? Style?

She just doesn't usually play away from home, just 3 tournaments this year, the last a Spain W35 in May which she won.

Ukrainian deserved it. Sonay had some good moments particularly early but her opponent was stronger and grittier on the day. Still a good week all the same and keep moving forward and up.

Disappointing performance from Kartal who became very defensive and really was just waiting for errors from her opponent.

Shame but in the final set I always felt that the other girl had a slight edge. Onwards and upwards.

Difference was in depth of shot. First set Sonay kept excellent length drawing errors from Ukrainian. Last 2 sets everything was landing halfway up the court.

Pity. But very well done to Yuliia for qualifying for all 4 Slams this year.

Completely agree with Seagull - great depth at first, but that fell away in both the second and third sets. Hence the Ukrainian always seemed to be on the front foot in most points. Sonya was excellent in the first set, and to win 25 sets of tennis in a row says shes doing lots of things very right and will learn from this. It couldnt have been easy TBF when the crowd cheered the Ukrainian every time she won a point, and Sonya was met with almost silence when she came out on top of a point. But she will be used to that sort of thing Im sure. Next time

I remember watching Lys duff up Miyazaki at Shrewsbury a few years ago by one of the most WTA match scores of all time. Something like 6-0 2-6 6-0.

Looks like they are well on the way to recreating it today.

That's right - in fact, it was even more extreme - 6-0 1-6 6-0.

*1-4 now.

And broken from *40-15 early in the second. Has no answers to this from Lys. Being utterly dominated.

1-6 1-2*

Shame that both lost.

Wonder what Sonays plans are now. There are no British events until mid October.
