Week 34 - Grand Slam US Open, USA - QUALIFYING - Hard

Lily was cruising in that second set - I fully expected her to have won whilst I was out for a few minutes.

It got a little bit more worrisome that it might have been - but she toughed it out, just

Bravo, Lily !

Lily should have had a wildcard

Julieta Pareja who - I believe - was born on the same day as Hannah Klugman, has just won her QR1 match

She's just inside the top-1000 - and beat Kayla Day, in two sets, who is about WR 166 or so

Played some lovely precise tennis

Nice for the US media

Fran takes the opening set 6-1 against the highly seeded Masarova. V good!

Have we had 4 opening round womens wins in an overseas slam in recently times? (Someone will tell me it was in the past few slams!).

Into a decider - 6-1 2-6 - typical.

Not typical of our first 3 women.

3 matches to 0. 6 sets to 0. 36 games to 14.

Letting the side down, Fran. But then again, *3-0 up in the third set is much better again!

Phew. After missing all those match points it was a good hold at *5-6 and a solid MTB. Nice hug at the end.

And despite the scoreline it was not a long match, just over 2 hours. So hopefully her body is ok.

Four wins out of four is probably better than any of us imagined - great results from all 4 - I was especially pleased to see Fran come through that one. I see Lily will have to face Liechtenstein's finest - Von Diechmann has been number one ranked player in Liechtenstein for quite some time, so I guess she must be really good!

The last time British women went 100% in QR1 here, one of the (then) 6 of them went on to win the title wink
