As mentioned on the men's thread, I made it to the open yesterday and saw both Heather and Sonay (and Fran albeit in the Ralph Lauren store!).
Heather's match was a bit of a stroll for her with Clervie just hitting and missing. She quite clearly hasn't figured out when to play defensively, trying to hit too aggressively back when it was too difficult to do so. She'll get there, just needs to rein it in a little. Heather just played her B game and got the job done. It was a very well-attended match. Heather's mum (of course) but then Annie K, Katie Boulter, Katie's coach, Colin Beecher, and former player Andrea Petkovic were all in Heather player area.
I enjoyed watching Sonay, my first time live. Firstly, she hits the ball much harder than I'd anticipated and has a better serve, especially for her height. I was super impressed. Great attitude, real athleticism, nice all-round game. Was very professional and business-like. She's developing brilliantly, I hope she can stay fit.
Yeah Sonay I find when I watch her I feel it seems a bit passive and patty, then she just whips it - usually off the forehand, cross court, shortish angle - for a winner, forced error, or gets a simpler shot. But as you say, when you watch her in person there's much more weight behind the ordinary rally balls than it can look on a stream.
She's doing great, and really pleased she got the win yesterday. Allez!
Waa actually 2 breaks up at *3-0 but was threatened with being back on parity at *4-3 advantage down despite having had at least one game point in all 8 games in set 2.
